That’s kinda true
But 14 & 20 are in the same group talent-wise
Guys like Konecny get picked in the 20s and guys like Girgs get picked in the teens just about every year

We aren’t talking about the super high end talent from your examples at the point we will be choosing
I’ll take the playoffs

- jdfitz77

The fact of the matter is I believe this year is successful no matter if we make the playoffs or just fall short. Either we get the playoff experience and maybe surprise a team like Washington/Columbus or we at least took a huge step forward and have a crack at the lottery.

You could be right, you could be wrong. If we win two more games we have Dylan Strome instead of Jack Eichel. If we lose two more games we could of had Clayton Keller instead of Alex Nylander. If we lose 5 more games maybe we draft Pettersson 5th overall or maybe Botts goes with Mittelstadt still. At the end of the day it depends on the ability of the scouting staff, but these guys have given me reasons to believe the past few years. The higher you draft, the better the chance you get of getting your guy.

Playoff experience matters

Make the playoffs this year

Gets the young guys playoff experience, learn what it takes to win in the post season. So when they add more pieces to the puzzle they are ready guns a blazing.

They have 4 1st round draft picks in the next 2 years.

There is no tanking.

They aren't getting a top 5 pick.

It's time to start winning.

Certainly wouldn’t hurt our young stars to get some Playoff experience

I can’t believe anyone would think it’s better for us to miss

It’s not like we’d miss & be picking top5

We have Scandella, Pominville, Sheary, Hunwick, Wilson, Sobotka. Does that give us a better shot then Toronto at winning the cup ? Playoff experience matters but it isnt paramount. The Caps won the cup last year due to good goaltending, and Kuznetsov and Ovi having two of the best individual performances of the past 10 years. I wouldn't discount Toronto winning the cup this year becuase 3 quarters of that team has less then 14 games of playoff experience. But Toronto might win the cup this year becuase their top 9 forward group has enough talent to field its own All-Star team.

There’s certainly benefits to it
Especially since no one in our “core” going forward has made it yet

Those benefits outweigh a few draft spots in the teens
Once it gets to that point, the talent is so close that you’re just as likely to get the guy at 20 that you’d have picked at 14
If someone scoops the guy u had your eye on, that sucks
But there wil be a half dozen or so guys still available that we had extremely closely rated

Heiskanen and Dallas also says hello. I bet the list of top 15 picks who had success in the NHL is a lot longer then the list of picks 20 and over that did. Unless you include all the Euros selected prior to 2000 that would of went top 5 today if scouting today was the same as it was back then.
