Wasn't Drake one time Chicago property?
Edit- he was a free agent target of Chicago, but signed with Edmonton. I thought his name was tied to Chicago in some way. |

I agree with most of this - but why move Gus for a 2nd or 3rd?
Defensemen who can shoot, score, pass, see plays, “point” the PP are not very common. Why not let him continue to develop his defensive skills (or, more to the point, work with him to develop his defensive skills) and turn him into a quality skater from the blue line? - StLBravesFan
Yes, Gus is playing better in his own zone. Not good, but better. And some of that improvement is because he’s playing with a HOF partner. But Gus is not a kid anymore, so there are limits on how much more upside there is with him. I’d suggest he may have a place on the 3rd pairing, and on the PP.
Don’t forget, the Hawks have a bunch of young, highly rated defensemen on the way up. If 2 or 3 of those guys hit, they’ll have to find spots for them. Perhaps Gus can be flipped for some other need down the road.
Keith was much better early in the year with Jokiharju. And Joki’s Underlying stats are significantly better than Gus. It’s early, and he’s still only 19, but I can see Joki developing in to Keith’s eventual replacement as the #1 pair shut down D for the Hawks. Gus will never get to that level. Let’s not forget the flashes Joki has shown, like going head to head against McDavid, and winning most of the battles. |

He was just an unsigned college free agent that the hawks were interested in because I believe he played with Schmaltz. |

This trade can't be bad, can it? I gather that Garrison is about done. What's the story on Caggiula and Norell? |

Good deal overall.
Garrison is on an expiring contract (versus Manning who had one extra year), has a booming point shot and can play physical. His defensive consistency may be the same as Manning, though.
Caggiula is a decent bottom 6 forward. Not big but endless motor with some offensive upside. Maybe a great 4th liner and okay 3rd liner if needed.
Norell was still Blackhawks property but loaned to Sweden IIRC. He was never going to make the Hawks and was at best AHL depth. |

I am just trying to figure Chiarelli's rationale for the trade. Is there some upside in Norell that I don't know about? And why would they move Caggiula in the deal, also? I just look at it as the Hawks banked about $750K for next year, they probably have a little more value in Caggiula than they did in Manning, and Garrison is basically on a PTO for the rest of the season here. |

It was raw trash for raw trash, simple as that. Manning is having a horrendous year and has an extra year on his contract at a larger hit so you guys win, but don't confuse Caggiula as anything more than a burden. |

While this deal gets rid of Manning's 2-year contract, it brings back a d-man for just the rest of the year so it doesn't necessarily address the glut on the blueline.
Overall I like the deal, though. Garrison can bring some value while Caggiula is a pretty decent bottom 6 winger. Maybe something like:
DeBrincat - Kampf - Sikura
Perlini - Kruger - Caggiula

Win for the Hawks. They got their seven D-Men set now and can send down Garrison to Rockford to bring a veteran presence to the team or be traded for a late round pick.
What's the word on Caggiula? Seems like Oilers fans are happy he's gone. Played a lot in the top six but is probably better off playing a bottom six role. Wonder where he fits for the now and long term if he's gonna end up staying.
Props to Bowman for trading Manning and not retaining any salary and gaining an extra 750k for next year's FA

Franson = Garrison
That makes sense to send Garrison to Rockford and this would solve the glut at defense so the Hawks are only carrying 7 especially once Jokiharju returns. |

Caggiula - don’t see top 6 minutes in Alberta - about 13-13-14 ATOI in his 3 seasons there. |

Essentially, adds another $750,000 for Cap Space next year...and if they wanted to send Caggiula to the Rock wouldn't his Cap hit only account for $500,000? Or do I have that wrong? |

Somebody has to go to Rockford now, as they are a player over the roster limit, according to Cap Friendly. I gathered that Garrison is probably done, regardless. |

Take it from someone who watched him: he definitely got top-6 minutes and boy was he awful in them. He'd probably do fine on a 3rd line with two above average 3rd liners on it (Anisimov fits the bill, not sure anyone else does), but he's high-event without the scoring... unless he's with McDavid, then he scores but also drives up GA numbers to the point of invalidating the "McDavid effect". |

Caggila , skates well, some skill. Fits bottom 6 depth.
You are ahead of me on the cap implications.
Anyone who believes Garrison will wear a hawk jersey this year, should stop posting on this board.
