My legit first thought at this news was "(frank) me, Jimbo's gonna hang onto Edler no matter what now."
Hutton can stay. he's proved himself a fine second pairing player. But its time to move on from Edler before he's Hansen/Higgins level useless. - Lindenis#1
Edler will get a two year, $10m contract. Hutton will get the Sven deal, 3 years $10m.

The biggest black eye is the D Sedin getting repeatedly punched by Marchand yes?
I would hope that every player, regardless of stature, wouldn't just take that. I don't mean that Goldy has to jump into a scrum fists flying, but you would hope he doesn't stand by eating (gloved) knuckle sandwiches. - 1970vintage
Yes. Even grabbing a guy and bear-hugging that player, in a scrum, is better than doing nothing at all.
Standing up and participating in some fashion, is all anyone can ask. |

with another team - VanHockeyGuy
He would certainly get more $ from a different team, but I think both JB and TG like what he provides... |

This brings us to Babcock's recent comments about the Leafs toughness being their PP. will the leafs be the next 2011 Canucks? |

If he can convince Edler to waive for a chance at a cup, sell high. I just don't think he'll waive. |

As much as most of us would like to move on from Edler and/or Tanev, both of them are still our 2 best defenseman.
Edler played 30 minutes last night and Tanev about 24. Until they get someone who can take some of those minutes, I can't see Benning not re-signing Edler...but dammit, he would get a pretty nice return in a trade.😁 |

Leafs need to trade for W Simmonds and C Tanev, and get out from under the Zeitsev contract to compete with Tampa. |

i've actually been thinking this for a while now.
difference being that the reffing standard won't change from regular season to playoffs.

Hughes will be the teams best defenseman next season, though he might not play the most minutes. As much as it would hurt to lose those two guys Forbes the remainder of the season it would sure help the team in 2-3 years as they start to get really good again. |

Hughes may end up being thè teams best defenseman. I usually like to see a player have at least 1 shift in the nhl before I make that claim though.
We have been down this road before with many of our top picks, including Juolevi Daigneault Petit Herter etc. |

One's that can play defence maybe. He's already a overpaid fringe NHLer |

I think he would but not if there is any sense of returning.
If JB was like "time to go Alex. We don't have a spot next year" I think he waives. but if Benning is like "Well you know, i'm not sure and stuff. the roster isn't set and we'll figure it out eventually" then Edler's going to stay put. |

He's a top 4 Dman handling 21+ minutes a night, usually pretty damn well, that can skate well, has handled some tough matchups just fine and has enough offensive tools to get by.
Erik Gudbranson got a raise by showing that he couldn't stay healthy, play physical, skate or score. Michael Kempny was a depth player/healthy scratch who turned a hot 20 games into a 4 year contract at a nice fat raise.
If Hutton hit UFA he'd get a sizeable deal. Because the alternatives are the MDZs, Sbisas, Kulikovs and Schenn's of the world for most teams. |
