What is it with your players and their (frank)ing dads man?
- Scabeh

I blame Dubas. Wouldn’t be problem with Lou. Sign Jagr, his dad is probably 90. Won’t be a problem.

Offer sheets, c'mon.

GM sends offer sheet, looks like total Richard to rest of league, possibly damaging relations permanently and exposing their own RFA(s) to same treatment.

So said GM needs to be absolutely certain that player will actually sign it for it to be worthwhile.... which is extremely difficult to do with this thing called tampering.

Oh and team has to have the cap room to do it, so they're either a bottom-dweller that lives below the cap ("Ooo! Ooo! Where do I sign up long-term? I can't wait to have an unmovable contract with the Coyotes!") or a middling team that needs to move a bunch of cap boat anchor players to make room.... oh and they have to have all of their own 1st round picks too...

I doubt any gm who offer sheets anyone will damage any relationship (unless it wasnt great to begin with).
Its business.
Sure the offer sheeted gm might be pissed short term, but he'll get over it. Next time get your sh!t on order and dont let your superstars get to a point where they could be offer sheeted

nope ain't going to happen as long as Dubas is GM.
if you give your word to someone and break it, do you think other players will take notice and either leave or not sign with the Leafs as they are not trust worthy.
They'll pull a Jerry Maguire

I"m still happy to take bets on Nylander not being part of Leafs team for start of 2019-2020 season.

Arizona has nothing to lose. And GM does not have to be certain he will sign it.
The new breed of GM is not part of the good ole boy network. You are finding this in all sports, as new guys come in they tend to focus on analytics and less on feelings.

Teams can handle signing an 11 million and 12 million top end player. So you have 2 on the roster. Its the other contracts they handout that impact how the team will do.

Marner will be the interesting one. Matthews will get his 12 million or so in Toronto

Arizona has no money.
Arizona has no arena.
Arizona will be moved soon to another city.

Sign a hometown boy with Matthews talent you increase revenue and ticket sales, you might help get a new arena and probably do, you don't move.

Gary would be pleased

All that said Toronto will sign Matthews to a 12 million deal imho

Can't believe the Leafs will be picking Lafrieniere with one of the 2 picks they receive from the Matthews and Marner simulsheet.

Wedgie's hot take: Arizona signing Matthews would not be the worst thing in the world.

They simply don't have the revenues for adding a $15 million contract, so they would have to jettison 2-3 good players. The team is already a franking train wreck - just imagine the drafting positions for the next 4 years of our 4 compensatory 1st round draft picks.

Leafs should just trade Marleau next year. It would solve 99% of the issues.
