I'd only be interested in Edler as a bottom pair guy...at a bottom pair price. Myers I would be fine with. Though he's kinda like another guddy

Edler is the teams best defenseman, if you're moving on from him, which wouldn't hurt my feelings, then you have to find at least a comparable talent.

He needs to engage a bit in the D zone. He likes to avoid using his body and uses his stick

I love the pick for sure, but there's no rush to get him in the lineup. Benning is rebuilding the prospect pool thru the draft very nicely, in three drafts he's got some really good young players!

Finishing 5th last and 3rd last in the past three years really helps though. Finishing that low isn't a rebuild on the fly, it's a rebuild from flat out suckage. Although, it's not an Oilers or Leafs scorch the earth sell everything rebuild, it's more like what the Kings and Hawks did

Chicago had two top3 picks lead them to three stanley cups... pretty sure they bottomed out pretty hard to get them. Doughty is the best player on LA and they were pretty bad for a while. Not quite sure I see the distinction.

They can't all be superstars, top4 would be great. Hughes will be better than Juolevi Imo.

He doesn't bring much to the table but minutes . I'd make him move or walk away if he doesn't sign for 1.5 tops. Like vantel likes to say... a guy like Jamie Benn would be fine. Or someone from the farm. Give that half a season with Hughes in the mix then make a decision if you need a more immediate upgrade

Those are the hardest minutes of any defenseman on the team, how can you not see more than just minutes? He plays against the other teams best every game. Put him with an offensive player if he signs at a good price. Or let him walk. As long as you can replace his services it's all good.

It's not a secret I was excited when Benning was hired, when did you join? I was happy we were getting a guy with a background in drafting when Trev hired him. Within three years I'd soured on him and Aquilini, I think you know the rest of the story.

Yeah and Sutter got all the hard minutes at forward as well. But the team is succeeding without him in that role. They are adapting and being given opportunity that for years was only handed to Edler. Just like the panic about replacing the sedins offense. Give the young guys a bigger role and somebody may just surprise

Yeah I'd have no issues with that, not in love with Edler's game by any means but he does play a key role with the team. I like Sautner's game in a similar defensive role.

Here's a scouting report from 2011/12 on him.

"One of the main reason’s that Murray will be drafted very high in next summer’s draft is that his skill set is tremendous. His skating ability and decision-making on the ice are outstanding, and his puckmoving ability is arguably his best talent. Sounds a bit like Scott Niedermayer, doesn’t it? Even though is offensive ability is off the charts, Ryan doesn’t shy away from physical play, and always seems to be in the right position. Size isn’t a concern with Murray, as the 6’1″, 195 pound blueliner is plenty capable of handling himself against larger opponents. Strength isn’t an issue either, as Murray says that the key to being a top defenseman is “using body position and keeping a good stick, you don’t have to be able to crush guys.”

Yeah, you're right, my bad. His 31 points in 46 games during his draft year are also a bit more impressive considering that he didn't really play with any star offensive CHL talent.

Too much water under the bridge, I still don't like the man for what he's done, but I'm not afraid to admit I think he's better on the job now than when he first arrived. Having been an assistance GM for several years I thought he'd be better at the job being so involved in multiple things in Boston. Contracts, trades, scouting, drafting.

I didn't think he was a rookie, even though he technically was, having been around the NHL for so long. I didn't think he was a guy that needed to learn on the job. Unfortunately that wasn't the case. He wasn't a young guy, he'd been around for a long time and knew a lot of the GM's around the league.

He made some nice moves his first year, I was excited about the Virtanen and McCann picks. But then he started to reach instead of rebuild, pressure from Aquilini I'm assuming. That's when I started to get annoyed.
