The average team in the NHL probably about tripled in value over that time period. including the top in TOR, NYR, MTL. The lowest value teams now about doubled their value. The spread between the top and bottom now is huge at over a billion difference. Hawks went from 16th in value to 4th.

NO front office experience
NO general management experience - making trades, negotiating contracts, negotiating with other general managers....
NO marketing experience (and if you think that's not important in today's sports management, you don't understand sports management)

What you want is "hockey guys" running the on-ice and player procurement pieces of the organization (the general manager, etc.) paired with business people running the organization and other aspects of the business; and both with the understanding of what they should be doing to further the progress of the franchise.

Three Cups DID have a lot to do with it.

So did being in the third largest market in the country - and having the business people around who could develop that market.

So did owning half of the building.

So did the corporate promotions and game-day promotions and merchandising promotions and market development promotions and....

You guys think that all you have to do is throw the puck out on the ice and the fans come flocking in.

The president of the organization should be hockey minded as someone who can give his opinion and assist with GM, scouting, hockey operations, ect. Their are things called marketing, finance, HR, etc. departments run by business minded people. Marketing is quite important in non hockey minded cities. McD is not a marketing genius, he stepped in to a perfect situation with a core of players that were going to win multiple Stanley cups. Winning is the best marketing which in lies with hockey guys doing their jobs

Personally I would rather have some one with hockey experience, like Q, in the President's position than a marketing guy. Let's say Q is named to that position. He doesn't have to personally do the marketing, and negotiate contracts or trades. He would hire people to perform those duties. The sign of a good executive is to hire competent people around him/her and let them to their job.

I would rather have that type of executive than having one surrounded by yes man and thinking he knows everything about the business.

Is Q the right guy for the the President's job? Who knows but I think it is time for a drastic reorg of the front office.
