Leafs should ask about Maroon... he’s no speedster, but has good hands, can finish and police some of the knuckleheads out there. And St. Louis is going nowhere fast.
Put a big deal together for him and Parayko... - dozerD10
That is a great idea
Maroon and Parayko for Zaitsev, Brown, Liljegren and a 1st in 2019. |

I don't think you can do that.

I didn't think so either.. But hopefully, Pridham, Gilman and Dubas find a way to circumvent the rules. |

Let's call Gardiner for Simmonds a fair trade. In fact, some would argue that Gardiner is the better asset here - but let's not worry too much about that.
So that leaves Brown and Bracco for Provarov. That's so absurd I don't think we have to spend any more time discussing it.
And then we are throwing in Horton's LTIR - to a team that traditionally spends to the cap?
I'm guessing Philly will reject this - but I suggest you go into the Flyers thread and see if you have any buyers.
No, seriously: I dare you.

I don't actually know the answer to this question: is Toronto still paying actual money to Kessel, or is it just retained cap hit? |

I believe it's salary retained, which affects the cap hit. |

I wouldn't expect the Leafs to grab a guy like Parayko or Pietrangelo by the deadline. Blues will want Nylander but Dubas won't trade him until after July, if at all.
I'm guessing, (depending on Gardiner's contract demands) that we'll end up seeing a C.Tanev for Holl + 2nd type deal, or a Kapanen for Pesce type exchange. A guy that will be around past this year at a reasonable cap hit. I think a guy like Marchment would get called up to add grit rather than trading for a depth winger.
Next year's D-pairings:
Rielly-Tanev/Pesce
Dermott-Zaitsev
Rosen-Ozhiganov
Borgman- depth league minimum guy
There are a few depth Marlie forwards who should be ready and capable to take bottom 6 roles next year. The cap will be tight, so let hope its enough to be a contender. This year might be our best chance

As far as I remember from the CBA, the team retaining has both the cap hit and the financial obligations from the retention. I assume to help out the smaller market teams who might want to acquire a guy but not pay as much in actual $.
As an interesting aside, if a player traded with salary retained is sent to the minors, the team that traded them does not receive any financial benefit from the player being sent down, while the team sending them to the minors can bury up to the regular amount. |

Tavares always would have signed with Leafs.
Even with Nonis as GM and Ron Wilson as coach. |

1. PHI not trading Provorov, TOR not trading Brown since he is someone Babcock trusts.
2. You cannot trade money retained on a deal and Keith is not RH or the player he was a couple years ago.
3. Dubas is not trading Sparks, otherwise it is an admission that waiving McElhinney and Pickard was a mistake.

but the actual question is whether Leafs can get Doughty, Kempe and a 1st for Nylander. |
