lol wut?
He avg 13 mins a night at age 31.
He also has been a possession black hole his entire career.
He hasn't had one single season that suggests he belongs in the NHL. - Feds91Stammer
Okay that last sentence is a bit dramatic. He was a really solid bottom pair D-man for us his last year in the Burgh and we all laughed at the contract Calgary gave him but he was much better in Calgary than anyone anticipated. |

A little bit of both. I think we can all agree that Mario Lemieux was one of the best players ever (if not the best). So I'm obviously just messing with you in a friendly way.
That being said, you generally seem to evaluate players based on their "advanced" stats. So my question is, how would you do a proper evaluation of players when said statistics are not available? And I am asking that is a completely non-ass way. I really do want to know. - jmatchett383
Personally I don't rely on one single metric or stats alone. However the data we have today helps eliminate our confirmation and recency biases as much as possible.
In an ideal world to evaluate a player I have intricate knowledge of the system the coach is making the player play in. I have shift by shift video and a culmination of shot/passing/skating data. |

I don't know, you seem to use, let's call then "possession" metrics more than any other method to evaluate a player, based on what I've seen on here.
So again, what metrics would you use to evaluate a player like Mario Lemieux? |

By solid you mean on ice for 22 goals for and 27 goals against at 5v5? |

That would also have to do with the goalie was well as the other 9 skaters on the ice, though. For how many of those goals, for and against, did he have a large portion of responsibility? |

Well he shot 19% for his career much of which was during a time where league average was 12% so I am going to say that suggests he was elite at creating high danger chances. |

Or at least at finishing them, not necessarily creating them.
But let's say a player only shoots at 11%, but still puts up huge numbers because his playmaking ability is off-the charts. Analytically, you could (not would, COULD) surmise that he didn't create a lot of HDSC's.
Really, I'm not trying to be a Richard, just that I don't think that analytics alone is the perfect way to evaluate a player. |

He was responsible for 60 of the 27 goals against. |

So let's say you made that trade 4 years ago. How would you feel aboot it now? - jmatchett383
I think he would have been a very good winger for Crosby or Malkin in his younger years. He can do all the things Hornqvist does with better hands. I don’t think I’d be too mad about it. His production and value would have been inflated, especially if he played with Sid and he could possibly have been traded by now. |

Over how long of a time period are those stats collected? Scuderi played against the very best goal scorers in the entire world on a lot of nights. He also probably didn’t see a lot of ice time with Crosby or Malkins line. If those are his Pittsburgh career numbers that’s not bad by any means. Tavaras and Ovi gonna score goals. It’s going to happen. |

I like that Brassard is a center. Can’t do much better when two top 9 forwards are out. |
