Not sure what his age will be when his contract expires but.....right now he's probably the best bargain in the league at 8.7. Say he's nearing the end with 1-2 seasons left. Depending on how the Pens are, say a fringe team like the Wings, I think 66 at that time asks what he wants? Make 1 last run with a contender or ride it out. Its not like you can rebuild off trade from a player at that point in their career. What would Joe Thornton be worth today in a trade?

So Joe Thornton is a top-10 all-time NHL player? That's like using Adam Oates as a barometer for Mario Lemieux.

No but future HOFer, and had a very long successful career.

Just using him as an example of a trade value at that point. He would be what an ok 3C? What's that worth? Not much IMO to another team making a run or the Sharks for what the return would be and loss of the face of the franchise.

It all depends on how well Crosby is playing at 35+ yrs of age.

I wish we knew STL's angle here.

Are they looking to rebuild? If so, that drastically affects what they'd be looking for.

Are they looking for a retool? This also drastically affects the return they be seeking.

Parayko is a young first-pairing RD who's signed to a great contract. What could they be looking for in return? A different type of dman? A goalie? More scoring?

If it's more scoring, then why would they move Tarasenko or Schwartz? Tarasenko had four seasons in a row of 33 goals or more. Even top players can have a couple of off-years.

Are they looking for a bunch of 1st rounders and top prospects?

Right. But Crosby is more than just a player, he's a name/face/gate. His return would be way more than a guy like Thornton.

I mean a smart GM would build around Tarasenko right?

Unless they think he will be gone soon anyway along with Parayako.

Nope. I wouldn’t trade Guentzel for Tarasenko at all.

It's definitely puzzling, seeing as they just traded 2 consecutive firsts to the Flyers for poor victim Brayden Schenn.

Everything considered I think Pens need a third line center.

https://puckprose.com/201...ing-listen-offers-anyone/

This article suggest they are no doubt looking to rebuild. IMO if they are truly looking to rebuild the Pens don't have much to offer.

Parayko and Tarasenko are easily worth a top-ten pick. I immediately look at Shero wanting send a 1st for Parayko.

I have to think the Kings, Yotes, and Rangers would throw a 1st at Tarasenko or even Parayko.

Now, STL still needs goaltending. IMO that should be their first priority. Do they view Murray has a true #1? If yes, they have a real chip. That is if the Pens are looking to move Murray.

There are just too many what-ifs in dealing with STL.

Well, if Brassard is going to stick on the wing then yes.

This situation angers me even more because if Cullen wasn't here we wouldn't even be in this situation. Brass would remain at 3C and when everyone is healthy he'd have quality wings.

I don't know who's been using my coffee creamer every day (the bottle with my name on it).

But I sure hope they like soap and salt in their coffee.

Brassard is the reason we need a 3c. Dude just hasn’t worked out and has made it well known he wants out.

If retooling, and I were to throw out a wild proposal...

something around Kessel + Maatta for Parayko/Pietrangelo + Schenn

That way both teams are shuffling the deck rather than rebuilding. PIT gets a D upgrade and STL gets a forward upgrade.

I don't think Kessel + Maatta gets you even Pietrangelo. Injured or not, dude's a top-10 defender.

I still can't get passed any trade involving Kessel.

I threw him as an option because I think STL would rather keep Parayko.

As the other poster said though, I don't really know what STL wants.

Guentzel is good in his own right, but the Sidney Crosby factor plays a big role in it.
