Winning 5% of their remaining games seems like a really tall order.

Based on what?

I have been a Lethera fan, he still has good hockey sense but it is obvious he is just a step slow. With how many minutes he is playing, we have hit the floor with our 4th line center position.

Mathematically it looks like they are in the wildcard hunt (or even a divisional spot) but it is hard to gain ground when you give up more than you score and your special teams are at or near the bottom.
- Scoob

Teams above and below (ok all teams are above) will have winning and losing streaks, but if you just look at the Flyers team.

20 games to January 19, 2019

If the Flyers go 10-10 (.500) that means they will have to go 25-9 (.740) the rest of the year just to make the playoffs. They have to win A LOT of games now in the month of December and January, otherwise sell, sell, sell and welcome home Hughes.

Trade Deadline: February 25, 2019

The way he's been playing in the A, why wouldn't we try him out. I also think they brought him for this road trip because of the speed. We will not have last change and could you imagine Lehtera being caught out there against Gaudreau or Mcdavid? Not saying this kid can defend them but at least hes got some foot speed.

What helps (or hurts) is that the second half of the season is packed with conference and divisional foes that the Flyers are chasing. Beat the teams that are also in the wildcard hunt and it could happen.

It won't.

But it could.

I just added a counter to my profile, as long as that counter doesn't drop too fast then the Flyers can make the playoffs.

agreed, MJL and I have had some disagreements but on the whole we actually agree more than we disagree. He defends Hextall more than most, I am ok with that, he is passionate about it.

thinking about it, I was having more fun arguing with MJL

Hextall sucks, should have been fired last year

I think MJL is a passionate fan who tries his best to be objective. He most importantly sticks to his beliefs.

Not sure why we are trying to put a number on it, we don't know how many points will be needed. Right now we are 5 points out of the wild card with a handful of teams to jump. Tough task but there are still 50 games left so it's doable.

I'd do it based on points. There are 108 points remaining. Assuming 95 gets the playoffs they need 68 more points. That means they can "afford" to give up 40 points from now on.

regulation loss = -2
OT/SO loss = -1

I understand the talking points on Lehtera. I'm not saying you're wrong because I don't know, but I'm just wondering how he's better? Another question I would have and I don't expect anyone to have an answer but if he's better, why hasn't he been on the team all along?

Just a crazy thought... What about Luongo? FLA is in the basement.

PRO: Should cost us less (trade value) than Quick or Crawford. His contract cap hit ($4.5M) is less than Q and C. Better than what we have now. Old enough not to interfere with Hart moving up. His style doesn't rely on speed/flex as much as other goalies - he's big... He is not doing well, but neither is his team.

CON: He's old, How many more years does he have?, His contract is for another few years through 22 (which is a pro and con). Probably won't waive the NTC, he likes FLA.

Lehtera is slow, this kid is fast, he's shown some offensive upside this year, we will have last change all road trip meaning Mcdavid might be against Lehtera, hence Lehtera should sit all road trip and give Varone a look. That good enough?

I’m not sure this is the answer to that question, but I did read an article that went something to the effect that Phantoms HC Scott Gordon believes Varone has slowly improved and could just recently be ready for the NHL.

Luongo has been a MASH unit for the last two seasons. He missed a lot of time last year due to injury and has been on the DL twice already this season.

When he is healthy he is still a very good goalie.......but his injury history lately has been Neuvy like.

He is not a kid and he's not really that fast. He's 28 and at that age, there is no upside. He is a career AHL'er who has had a few cups of coffee at the NHL level. Very good AHL offensive player but who knows if that can translate to the NHL. To this point it has not.

McDavid is going to outskate any player on the Flyers.

I took a close look at the standings yesterday and although there is a couple overachievers who will predictable decline down the stretch, there are still more than a handful to pass. It’s uphill from here on out.

Really, I do hope they find a way.

of course it is just an opinion. AS for the why hasn't he already, it is fair to say that Hak has been trying a variety of solutions, with how the Flyers are playing change should be expected. Varone has played well in the AHL and he is mature at 28, playing 5-8 minutes a night mitigates risk. I would think he has earned a look. Watch Lethera, as he moves to the puck on the PK, he is heading to the right spot but he just doesn't get there in time. Whether it is to fill the lane or break up the play. This happens on both sides of the puck for Lethera. When he has the puck, he loses control, my opinion his lack of speed lets the D get on him quicker, he then can't adjust quick enough to make the play. I'll add that the coaching staff has better info than us, once I add that to what I think, I like the move.

Lehtera has been pretty ineffective. Also, I’ve seen plenty of AHL vets come up and be effective for a short time before their play reverts to the mean. Guys like Al Hill, Don Nachbauer, Tim Tookey, Peter White and more recently Colin McDonald were able to come up play a solid couple to a few games in the past

Even Varone can only give them a couple of decent games it will still give them a bit more from the 4C spot that they have been getting recently from Lehtera. It also gives Fletcher a bit more time to address this issue. Perhaps he goes out and acquires a middle 6 LW (which should be less costly to acquire than a middle 6 center) and they can move Laughton to 4C.

Either way, there is little to risk to giving Varone a shot over Lehtera at this point.
