There is a good chance the Leafs can't have Johnnson and Liljegren on the team in 3 years because of the cap.
There is no need to hoard. - Santo_44
How do you figure? Neither one of these players will be commanding outrageous contracts.
It's precisely players like Johnnson and Liljegren who the Leafs need in 3 years because of the cap. And even if they were potentially pieces that might put the Leafs in cap hell they're worth more in a couple of years than they are right now as tradeable assets. |

Subtract Zaitsev and Gardiner - leafs can afford him. - Cooshie
Trade Zaits and his $4.5M cap hit and we can keep Gardiner. |
|
|
|
Maybe, but ask yourself this.. For this season and next, would Pietrangelo or Liljegren give us a better shot at the Cup? - PatC80
But it's not just Liljegren...
It's Liljegren, Johnsson and a 1st (Zaitsev not worth mentioning).... |

He actually might be pretty attractive if the Leafs ate his signing bonus next season before dealing him. |

If it's just Zaitsev, might have to give up a 2nd rounder or something to dump him. I am not opposed. |

Not a lot of teams are going to want to pay $4.5 Million per for a guy with a partial NTC and 5 years remaining.
Especially one who has seen his production drop in back to back years while he should be about in his prime. |

I agree, Canes and Leafs should just swap two struggling D.

Johnnson is looking at his 3rd contract this offseason. In a few years the Leafs simply can not have their "depth" players making 3 million a season. |

okay well one is coming off an injury and has been consistently paired with a guy trying to play his offside for the first time since junior, and the other just blows so I dunno. |

Best part is they only have to pick up their poop and move to the other dressing room - they can both be in tonight's lineup!
Good job, Trashie. Feel free to rummage through my green bin tonight. |

That's why I'm suggesting the Leafs eat his 3M bonus next season before trading him. 1.5M would be pretty attractive.
The M-NTC really shouldn't be much of a problem - if it were an NMC it would be. |

For salary, sure, but they still have to pay him $4.5 million the next year, and the year afetr that, and after that...
and that doesn't change his cap hit. |

I look around the league and team's number 4 dmen are pretty much like Zaitsev. Zaitsev is fine as a number 4 |

If by "depth" players you're referring to 4th line forwards, sure - I'm with you. I don't think that is what Johnsson is.
Having said that, I guess I'm trying to understand what you think the Leafs will be capable of affording. How many players can the Leafs sign for over 3M?
Just because the Leafs will be carrying AM34, MM, JT, and Nylander with hefty contracts doesn't mean there won't be room for more. It also doesn't mean the Leafs can't move any of those pieces (I'm looking at you, Bill Ny!) to make room for players like Liljegren if they prove capable. |

The cap hit may actually be attractive for some bottom feeders.
Not having to pay 3M as part of the total sum of the remaining contract is attractive. Not to mention the same strategy could be used in the last two remaining years to entice a trade (e.g. eat the 2M signing bonus).
Bottom-line: he's tradable and the Leafs shouldn't have to sweeten the pot ridiculously to move him. |
