When most people refer to grit or toughness, they are not referring to fighters/fighting or taking alot of penalties.
Simply players with more edge, but of course skill.
Personally, i think the leafs did show a little more grit Saturday. They didnt just get pushed over.

I haven’t seen one person say this....

Just because a player is put into a deal it does not make him the centrepiece.

I think what he is saying that the blues taking Zaitsev is a wash we get cap space they get a RHD. Some peoples dream of sending Zaitsev and a bottom 6 fwd of our choice is not happening this year. Needs to be 2 of a 1st, a speedy winger, or a decent prospect.

I think at the end of the day you have to play your style of game. Teams lower in the standings might want to hit the Leafs because they know it’s not easy to out skill the Leafs.

Getting a tougher player at the deadline isn’t going to do much...the leafs will still play their style of game and the other teams will try to find ways to exploit it.

I’ll still take a Simmonds, Gudas, Kreider type player. A big hit every now and then is great...especially when it comes from a good player. But if the price is too high the Leafs won’t do it. They’ll want to upgrade their D first.

Do the St. Louis Blues not have scouts? What were they thinking giving a 32 year old defensively poor Tyler Bozak 3 years at $5 M ? They deserve to suck.
Philly must also be feeling a little nervous with the JVR signing right now. Injured and not really producing so far, but he is a proven scorer, just invisible defensively and on the rest of the ice.

Yeah I just don’t see anyone saying they will send Z and a bottom 6 forward....no one is disagreeing that adding Z to the deal isn’t a plus.

Adding Z makes a deal possible...any good team that will want to trade for Pietrangelo will need to work out a way to send salary back. AP will(if he is even available by TDL) will go to a top team in the league. And top teams generally won’t have the cap space to take on 6.5 million for two years. A top team will pay the price. A middling team fighting for a playoff spot probably won’t

Well the players people keep mentioning, gernally do take penalties.

So who is the tough gritty player that doesnt take penalties that the Leafs need to get?

I’d take Gudas.

Not because he’s tough but because he improves the D. The fact he hits and is a tougher player is just an added bonus.

I wish Bozie all the best.
Glad he signed that deal with the Blues and not the leafs.

Yeah, I read an article where Gudas talked about having to tone it down physically a bit this year due to the game changing.

He’s been doing pretty well with it, and I went to the Leafs 6-0 game against Philly. Gudas was the only D that could keep up with the leafs forwards. And hit Johnnson pretty hard in the first min of the game.

But....he did score a hat trick in 10 mins after that hit....hmm....maybe we should re think this toughness thing?

please rewatch Philly's first round playoff series of last year - you might want to revisit that statement. Gudas was the primary reason Flyers lost that series.

Yes and yes. He's been suspended + been involved in a lot of questionable poop. He's got a mean streak that crosses the line pretty often. He's a decent defender but I imagine if people took issue with Polak's stellar 1-boarding-penalty-per game stats, they'll REALLY dislike what Gudas gets up to.

I read this earlier:

Fun Fact: So far this season, JT has more points than Bozak, JVR, Polak, and Komarov combined, including more than twice as many goals.

(Yes, I know JVR only has played like 10 games)
