No way......no way, does trading Zaitzev and Kapi AND a 1st, for 11/2 years of ANY defenceman make sense! |

Kapi is a keeper. He is Nyladers pal, no way he goes. I’d rather Nylander goes but that’s not happening either. |

Don't trade Kapenen because he's friends with Nylander but trade Nylander.
Excellent logic. |

That would be an absolutely atrocious move on the Leafs part. They'd lose this deal if all they did was sign Pietrangelo as a free agent and give up nothing but cap room. He's a MARGINAL improvement on Zaitsev, but is going to be signed well into his 30's...NO NO NOOOOO! Giving up Kapanen or/and Johnsson AND a 1st? The Blues would drug, rope and stuff Pietrangelo into a taxicab bound for Toronto and tell the driver not to stop driving for anything for that return. |

Incorrect.
They'd lose this deal if all they did was sign Pietrangelo as a free agent and give up nothing but cap room.
Also incorrect. It'll take 1.5 years for him to become a UFA and there's no guarantee he'll sign with the Leafs or even reach the open market by then. Also, players that reach UFA status usually cost more to sign so because the Leafs cap space is crucial, it's better to sign him to a lower costing deal by acquiring him. Also, because cap space is important, dumping Zaitsev opens up 4.5 AAV to give to him. It's a win/win.
He's a MARGINAL improvement on Zaitsev, but is going to be signed well into his 30's...NO NO NOOOOO!
Flat out wrong. He's a giant improvement over Zaitsev. Pietrangelo has literally been a Norris candidate. Zaitsev isn't even a legit top pairing D much less one of the best in the league at his position.
Giving up Kapanen or/and Johnsson AND a 1st? The Blues would drug, rope and stuff Pietrangelo into a taxicab bound for Toronto and tell the driver not to stop driving for anything for that return.
That's a steal for a #1 RHD. |

Well, the Leafs can’t be the softest team in the league. (frank) that.
I’m only suggesting Marchment because it’s a cheap and easy option.
This has to be addressed by the deadline.

hey how do you get away with this sort of wrongthink in leafs forum without being denounced?
keep kappy, trade soft as slime swedes for real north american dmen and sandpaper
what a (frank)ing joke

How do you figure Pietrangelo is a marginal improvement over Zaitsev? There is no metric where they’re remotely comparable.

The one on one play when the Leafs were shorthanded?
If it is...I backed it up and watched it slow motion...shoulder to shoulder - didn't hit his head at all. - Woderwick
Are you talking about the one where he’s getting up, and gets hit again?
In any case, even if it wasn’t a head shot, it was definitely later than 0.8s |

That suspension is a total joke. The only thing you can argue is that it is late. I don't know what the rule book says for timing, but it is like 1 and a half seconds after he passes the puck...? Is that even late??
Obvious there is a bias against the Leafs. Probably mostly Canadian referees in the NHL not wanting to look like they are favouring us, end up punishing us. As was said already, we are getting very few calls ever... very frustrating. That Boston game was an example. They outplayed us, however, if the Refs called penalties on them for all the poop they were pulling we would have been in it...

Zaitsev has been better this year, but ya, this is silly... - Hockey_Reverend
Yea, if we can get Pietrangelo and rid ourselves of Zaitsev... and all it costs is this years 1st and what is a bottom 6 winger on this team, you do it. In all reality that contract isn't going anywhere until the next compliance buyout though. |

It's like we're on a 10-game losing streak and at risk of missing the playoffs in here.
Now that my Saturday night rage has subsided, here are Gravy's Hot and Delicious Takes:
1. No to Pietrangelo. He's a good player and I'd love to have him, but I think the dynamics around the trade would be difficult to pull off (assets, sign and trade, etc.). It's not like EK where it was public knowledge (and OTT got burned).
2. Yes to playing our hockey. Fast and heavy. We are totally capable of playing that way. Remember the California road trip? ANA, LA aren't the teams they used to be, but those are all still physical teams and somehow we managed to sweep that road trip convincingly without having to ask our Alumnis to suit up. |
