It will be Matthews to the Rangers but the Leafs will match leaving Marner open to an offer sheet which the Rangers will give him and succeed. It's time for Dubas to step up and make some emergency moves. Marner will be a Canuck for Tanev and Leivo. Take THAT to the bank. |

Very true. Matthews should let those teams get into a bidding war. And once the Queefs match. Sign Marner to 10m a year. Tavares signing is gonna bite them in the crotch next summer - BringNYIhome

It’s not quite out of the question. The last team to offer sheet someone was the flyers with Weber and he actually signed. Of course NSH matched but they were in a better situation than the leafs IMO. NSH had plenty of money from what I remember to do it (I don’t think they had big name players to sign other than him). TML are not in that same situation.
The Sharks cap strapped the Blackhawks back when they offer sheeted Hjalmarsson. Sharks knew they weren’t able to keep both Niemi and Hjalmarsson. So CHI matched and let niemi walk to SJ. I can see this happening with Toronto. |

If the Leafs lose Matthews they can just go all-in for Puljujarvi and Parayko. |

Let him make it there first. He's months away from possibly being offer sheeted. If it even gets there. |

The Leafs have the cap space to match though. Matthews and Marner aren't a second rate goalie or a top 4 dman either. It was an easy choice for Chicago to keep Hammer over Niemi. |

What a troll blog. The only people talking about offer sheets are bitter fans of rival teams. And of course, bloggers for a certain hockey rumors site looking for hits. |

We added an elite forward without giving up any assets. If we have to trade a player or two that's fine - we will get a return for those players. Their cap situation would've been totally doable if Marner wasn't kicking this much ass right now. In the summer I had him at 7.5-8.0 but the way he's going it'll be probably be 9 or more.
Right now I'm thinking of what kind of miracle Dubas can pull to move Zaitsev out. That and trading Marleau's last year of his contract will solve our problems. |

Never said they didn’t have the cap space to match. It’s the fact if they match an outrageous offer (14-15 million) how do they keep other guys like Marner and Kapanen while staying competitive.
They need to sign a goalie in a couple years while also trying to piece together a defense. Liljegren may not be that savior.
Also, although I would have taken the younger Hjalmarsson over niemi as well but calling niemi a second rate goalie is absurd. He won the cup that year with Chicago posting 35 wins 18 losses. He’s had 4 30+ wins since 2010.
All I’m saying is IF he gets 13-15 million in any fashion, it will really put them in cap hell.
I don’t think Marner nor Matthews will go anywhere but the next few seasons may not go as well as some leaf fans may think due to cap issues and barely having a defense. I think they will find a Dman this year. But at what cost? Kapanen. Prospect (liljegren) and a pick for pietrangelo. Would you make that deal if it meant a cup this year? I would.
Edit. So i actually just read Kypreos mentions a similar trade. Kapanen or that Johnsson kid, a pick and zaitsev to make the contracts work. I didn’t realize pietrangelo had 1 more year on his deal ending in 2020. Id still make that deal. |

Marner wore a tie with blue leafs on it to the draft.
So good luck with that. |

Colors are correct but I’m going to say that’s not a leafs logo lol.
I highly doubt any kid would wear a tie of any team logo, in any sport for a draft. Sure would be a foolish statement and a cocky one no less for a kid to be that sure. |

The cap is really only tight next season. If we have to lose a player like Brown or Hyman... Or both to keep the rest of the band together, you do it.
I'd go so far as giving up a first, a prospect, and a lower roster player for Piete if the Blues take back the Zaitsev contract |

I don't really think the whole offer sheet will get out of control but if anyone is to step up Matthews would be the only thing that might barely save the coyotes.
The price to pay for that 3-4-5 first round picks whatever doesn't matter if he fills the stadium and they even win actual games.
Just sayin the leafs cant compete with giving him the max, no one can. The value of saving your team doesn't actually matter. - Donovan
...assuming he wants to leave a playoff contender for a permanently dead and forgettable career.
Now, if it was the Rangers offer him max...ok, prime location at least.
Ask McDavid if he'd rather be in Toronto or get that high salary of his in Edmonton. His face on draft day told the whole story, and not much has changed except the paycheck.
Also, the leafs cant afford to lose Gardner? They cant afford to lose him at $5mil, but they can most definitely afford to lose him at 6 or 7. |

Of course, that’s the easy way out. And you’re right, that will work.
What if there are no takers for those guys? Not sure why a team would want those guys at their prices. |
