I would be ok with sucking for a decade if we won 3 cups. - Retinalz
Once you're lucky enough to put a special group together, which includes 1st and 3rd overall picks, there's a window of opportunity to stay competitive. They were a really good team for the better part of a decade.
It's pretty hard to stay competitive forever when you don't have access to the best players at the top of the draft. Players get older. Not to mention their GM mismanaged their cap situation. I'd happily rebuild again with three Cups in my back pocket.
The Canucks went from being one of the best teams in the league from 2009 to 2013 (five years) to three years later finishing 3rd last....but Minivan totally ignores that. |

13 goals ahead of last year after game 32 - VANTEL
The Pettersson factor, however, they've also allowed about 30 more goals than at this point last year. So there is that! |

Better defense is > than new defense!! Not sure how to make them better but Quinn Hughes will certainly help I would think. They need to be able to defend better and stay healthier. |

I don't know what's so funny, just saying they're going to be better isn't going to make them better. How do you think they will be better?
Gudbranson sucks, third pairing
Stecher is a third pairing guy
MDZ sucks, fourth pairing at best
Hutton is a serviceable second pairing guy but sucks defensively
Edler is a good second pairing guy but he's getting older
Tanev is a nice complimentary first pairing guy
What they need is TWO top pairing guys, that's near impossible to just find!! |

Backes
Was that the order a couple years ago? Not saying adding Stone, or Skinner wouldn’t make the team better, just that it will come at a steep price, one that probably won’t look good a few years into the deal. - 1970vintage
Wanted nothing to do with Lucic.
Backes I was iffy on.

The Canucks won the President's Trophy in 2011 and went to the finals, they won the Prez Trophy again in 2012 but lost in the first round, 2013 they finished 7th overall in league standings....they got old and went downhill fast, same as the Hawks. Difference is they have three Cups to show for it and we have nothing. Damn rights I'd take it. |

Easier said than done, you can't just go out and get what you want in the NHL, there's no supermarket for star players. You're making it sound like they're just going shopping and it's a done deal. There's no guarantee's the defense will be able to defend any better next year.
But I'm as hopeful as you are |

You obviously can't change all 8 next year with current contracts but you can begin the change. Canucks can bring in 2 LHD like Hughes and one of their prospects. There is no LHD signed past next year and there is no reason to bring anyone of them back . That is half your D changed in one year.
Unlike Nucker I don't believe the Canucks will take a big hit if they move on from Edler. I heard all last year the same thing about losing Sedins and Vanek. Eventually you need to change. A cheaper Jordie Benn could replace what Edler brings.

You still haven't told me how they're going to be better defensively? Hughes, as just mentioned, will improve the offense from the defense but he isn't going to defend any better than Hutton is because he's the size of Minivan.
Our defense is relatively small, they can't defend well, therein lies a big problem for Benning. |

Better zone exits & 1st passes along with more mobility on D goes a long ways. Hughes will help there alot.
MDZ gone...placeholder days are over
Pouliot hasn’t done enough to be an regular
Stecher tenacious but no offence
Edler 1yr at a discount if he wants to stay
Tanev stays or traded in a no brainer idc
Build around Hughes EG Hutton
If a UFA F i like Stone most
Trade Marky & run Demko/Nillson next year.
If no trade then Marky/Demko is fine. |

Benning has a Stanley cup. You dont need to be a genius to win a stanley cup. But bowman has 3 more cup rings than the Canucks do. I think he deserves a bit more credit. |

Marky has a year left after this and nilsson is a UFA
Marky/demko seems more possible
Mdz/pouliot/granlund all gone (not re-signed)
Goldobin and Boeser and Leivo re-signed
Edler re-signs like you said (hopefully discount)
Hutton resigned for close to 2 or 2.5 (his aav now)
Id love to see
Tanev - hughes
Edler - stecher
Gudbranson - Juolevi/Sautner/UFA |

First of all the puck will be in our own end less time. Hughes will not be a frail little kid . He has played against some of the countries best players and in fact he has played in the worlds.
A guy like Sautner or McEneny can hold their own also . Their will be mistakes but it is part of the learning curve.
I looked at Tory Krug last night and McCavoy . They don't have issues . The offence that Edler brings is minimal . A defensive Dman is easy to find . Benn Polak McEneny |

The salary cap era yes, previous to that was different....Detroit was dominant for over 20 years for example |

Better D coach, one with a better plan than the current.
If I look back I don't think van has ever had a good D coach. Maybe during he Quinn era perhaps it was passable and bowness was better than most we've had.....But never anyone good.
