No one ever said don't add gritt. Ever. Not once.

Gettig a goon is pointless. If you can add a guy who can play who has some size/gritt all the better. I would love to see something like that added (like Simmons?)

This right here....no need to add a face puncher but instead a mean physical guy that doesn’t hurt the team with his play but will drop the gloves if it comes to it....that’s adding toughness without wasting a spot

I agree fully and I’ll never be swayed it is and always will be part of the game

It’s what makes hockey fun. It’s ever evolving and teams always try to adapt to other teams successful styles.. A goalie will steal a cup, then now you NEED a goalie to win. A strong defends team will win, now you need Doughty or Keith.. then it’s speed, then it’s skill and so on..

There are like, a million ways to skin cats on the road to win a cup.. I feel the leafs went full r-word on this speed and skill thing..

That’s why I’m suggesting guys like Bennett and Simmonds, or calling up Marchment who’s been producing.. Borgman has been good with the Marlies and would add anothe element on the blueline..

Bennett would be a no go but yes exactly to your point....despite what some might think having a guy like that does make other teams think twice about taking runs at star players....it’s not fool proof but still

Exactly from the Lou Lamoriello trap from jersey devils then next all big bodies won it for you next it was the goalie. Artic freind we agree tantamount that what we are talking about
ALSO ratchets up to a WHOLE other LEVEL of physicality in the playoffs. Bruins wore us down last year. Before that Orpik Wilson niskanin(can play dirty at times) orloff and ovechkin outworked us 2 years ago. I really believe the following
If we add the right forward that can play with a burr under his saddle and can also contribute 15-20g and we settle our backup goalie need (it may be sparks maybe not) and adding blue line help we will be a lot closer to Stan the mans mug

Fur sure!

It was pretty obvious in the playoffs what the leafs were lacking.. Teams have already shown this season that they’re willing to ratchet up their physical play against the buds. They probably saw the Boston series and figure that’s what they gotta do to win. Not to mention that it’s Toronto and every Tom Richard and Harry in the league is from there so they show off to mommy and daddy on hnic..

Oh yes!, who doesn’t want to bask in the spotlight on hnic
Tom Wilson usually ratchets up when he comes to Toronto with the caps to add just a little more intensity. Good little Ontario boy that he is. I’ll be so happy when the leafs make a few additions and subtractions and become ready for the more grittier teams

You understand that coaches can line-match right? If Matthews gets run then Babs can throw over the “messenger” then next time he’s on the ice. C’mon man, you’re better than this. Enough with the lame duck back-door responses about why they don’t need to get tougher.
- Arctic_AARDVARK

They need to get tougher so that other teams don't take liberaties with Matthews, but when they do the coach will just put them out for next shift against him?

So you acknowledge that goons won't stop it?

I never said they shouldn't get tougher. Not once.

No to goons.. unless it’s Reaves and he only plays against other bruisers.

I’ve always maintained that the tough guy needs to be able to play and produce..

Everyone’s been saying Leafs don’t need to get tougher. My rant wasn’t directed at you, you just responded to it.

There should be a guy on the ice at all time who’ll protect any of his teammates if he needs to..

Marleau, Hyman, Kadri, Hainsey (aparently), maybe Dermott??? Those guys don’t strike fear into their opponent. They aren’t a deterrent.

Leafs can’t be the female dog of the NHL.. As a Leafs fan who grew up in the 90’s I won’t stand for it. Lol.

You can never have too much skill and speed, it's silly to suggest otherwise.

I think when people are saying no to gritty players they're not saying never to any gritty players and only get soft marshmallows. They're saying if they can't play and contribute then it's pointless.

Leafs can play without being intimidated, they can be tough on the puck, they can fore check relentlessly, they can back check relentlessly, force the play, skate the other team into the ice - wear them down, make them pay on the PP, they can hit, they can get pissy - they can do all of these things - if they put their mind to it.

I’m not really saying they’re intimidated, i’m saying they’re going to get hurt if other teams keep taking liberties with our players.

(frank), bring back Polak to pile-drive mf’kers into the boards from behind ifgaf just do something to show that they aren’t the female dog of the league. I watched that Philly-Buffalo game and Gudas runs Larsson up by like 4 goals with 35 seconds left, why? Because he’s showing them they’re not female doges.

(frank) the NHL. I think Parros’ time should be up.

Wilson blindside interference. Ejection and no second look.

Reaves blindside interference. Ejection and no second look.

Hyman standard interference. Ejection and a hearing.

Bellamare elbows Clifford in the jaw. No second look.

Wagner throws a flying charge at Reilly. Ejection and no second look.

He's proven he has no clue what he's doing with the wildly inconsistent decisions he's made.
