Zetterberg and Datsyuk are unicorns. They were 7th and 6th round picks who turned into hall of fame talents.
- abasin

They were young players who drove the team when Yzerman and company got older

It doesn't matter where you got them, but you have to get them somehow

You basically just advocated trying to get unicorns because we never have any premium draft picks to get actual top prospects. I'm saying trade the older guys now and get the assets to become your Datsyuk/Zetterberg because YOU CAN'T rely on getting them "unicorns" in the later rounds

I was just thinking that Panarin would look good on a line with Crosby. I was thinking Kessel for RNH, then Malkin+ for Seth Jones and Panarin.
As much as it's great to have both Malkin and Crosby on the same team, they've been riding the heavy middle without any real superstars on their wings forever and they're only going to get slower with age. Kessel is too fast to be effective with someone like Malkin 5 on 5. Imagine McDavid having someone like Phil who can keep up with him coming over the blue line that can finish...itd be a nightmare to try and defend. Everyone would win.

Trading Malkin for Jones alone would work out better for the Penguins in the long run. The guy is 24 years old and is already considered one of the best Dmen in the league. I'm sure if Panarin was to get a taste of playing with someone like Crosby, you could easily get him to re-sign for at least 5-6 years.

What I'm trying to say is the risk/reward of trading the top 2 right wingers on the team, who have yet to show signs of slowing down, for picks and prospects with the hope of them panning out in 2-3 years is not there. I'd rather see them make minor moves to improve the current team, rather than blow it up and do a rebuild in the final years of Crosby and Malkins prime. Trading Kessel, Hornqvist, Brassard, Maata, and potentially Schultz, is not a "retool."

FOR Fvcks SAKES - Can you read?

You replace the 2 wingers or the players you trade today in this offseason with FREE AGENTS

Moving even 2 of those players opens up 13 million in capspace - sign new players - go and get a guy like Mark Stone - FOR FREE

The picks and prospects become your FUTURE DEPTH who are on low $$$ contracts and provide upside and scoring (like Rust/Sheary/Jake/Schultz did on the last cup runs) as the Crosby's/Malkins get older and slow down

You trade the movable parts BEFORE they start to decline as to maximize assets

We aren't winning the cup this year and we don't have the capspace or roster flexibility to improve the team by making "small changes"

The rest of Crosby and Malkins careers are going to wither away in mediocrity unless we do something soon

Who are these free agents that will replace their production that the Pens will get for the same cap hit? Its unlikely most of the top guys this year Panarin, Stone, Eberle, Skinner, even hit the market, and if they did almost every team in the league would be bidding on their services, which would force the Pens to overpay significantly. Under your plan the pens could be left with a giant hole on the right side, and have to overpay a free agent the same age as the guys you just traded away for a fraction of the production, all to have prospects they hope will become "future depth" when Crosby and Malkin are 35. I would rather see what the current core can do over the next three years.

Unreal. That was the fastest Natty I’ve ever seen and I don’t think it’s close. Blessed to have watched it.

EDIT: Of course that just means his trade value is sky high.

Nah JK. I’m off the trade Hornqvist train for now. I’ve come to realize exactly how poopty our forward depth is right now, and until that’s addressed we need him. Rutherford also seems pretty intent on accumulating bottom pairing defensemen, and I have no interest in trading Hornqvist for another LD.

Weird... I've actually held down a job for near a year, and about to get brought on full time as a team lead/manager.

I'm not worried about "winning" a Kessel trade

We already won that trade

We traded a late 1st, and Kapanen for 2 Stanley Cups minus whatever we would recoup in a trade

That's a fleecing in hindsight

- RoloTahmasee

Except the Leafs got Kapanen and Andersen and won the lottery after the trade.

Yeah I wouldn’t call it a fleecing lol both teams got exactly what they were looking for out of the trade. It was a win win for both teams.

Given how constrictive Phil's NTC was, the Leafs could have done much worse.

I knowww you guys don’t want to hear it but I’m a Canadian who went to high school south of Anaheim and I’m extremely happy that SPRONG just went shelf on Crawford. He’s playing with Henrique, could be some potential there. I really think Carlyle is going to give him offensive opportunities and let one of his defensive centers (Kesler or Henrique) pick up the slack
