If Hextall was limiting Hakstols coaching option, why did Hextall have to send Sanheim back to the ahl last year when sanheim was clearly outperforming half the starting defense but being scratched every game.
- Shrike

Sanheim wasn't outperforming anyone last year. His game was not completely ready for the NHL last year. He was overmatched in a lot of cases.

Last year I wasn't totally for the scratching but if I remember correctly Sanheim wasn't playing like he is this year. he was having some issues.

Agreed. He's already ahead of Hextall in the hair department.

agreed but Manning and Gudas were having more issues than anyone. Gudas is back to form and manning was a 7th D

After the turn the comments took last night, you ain't lying...

Yeah, I didn't stick around after it started getting stupid. I like the ball-busting here. It kind of reminds me of the lockerroom, but when people take it too seriously and start threatening each other I loose interest. HB is not the place to work out your daddy issues.

Were you saying the same thing when they finished as one of the top 5 teams in the league over the second half of last season?

Hak isn't perfect but IMO Hextall and the roster he assembled was more to blame then Hak. You just cant go into a season with Elliot and Mr. Glass as your goalies. I have 0 issue with Elliot for 45-50 games but Mr. Glass...come on..

Oh look he also didn't address third line center and go figure that's a struggle.

Oh look he also didn't address the PK and that is doing awesome.

Those are all on Hexy..

.

Hextall was absolutely not helping the roster or coaching staff and needed to be fired. But they have and continue to delay the necessary rookie struggles that every player goes through in order to move the organization forward

I just hope the work place can become more comfortable for everyone involved and they can move on from the living hell that it was under Hextall. Have they considered bringing in therapists?
- MJL

Haha this is great. Fletch needs to hug everyone upon taking the job, and consult every janitor and the Zamboni driver before making any moves.

Yes he’s was.

Old hockey saying, a defenseman needs 100 nhl games before he isn’t a rookie.

We should be 2 seasons into Sam Morin, and 1.5 into sanheim. But that’s ok we had manning and Macdonald pushing us to a first round exit where hakstol broke up the g courts tk line because it wasn’t heavy.

Manning is... not a popular player in Chicago.

At least when he was here he was cheap.

Sanheim wasn't playing well.

And I am pretty sure Hakstoll broke up the top line to try and get scoring balance as the other lines weren't producing much.

Laviolette is the equivalent of an 11 man blitz. Dial it back a little. I don't see that we need to add defensive checking forwards to the lineup.

FWIW, I was never a huge fan of Justin Bourne's writing when he first started, but he's gotten a lot better and this piece on hockey sticks is actually quite good:

Morin was hurt most of last year and is still recovering from an injury during the AHL playoffs last year. But yeah that's on Hextall or Hakstol that he's had a slight issue staying healthy recently.

If Chuck needs help figuring out where all those goals are leaking in, he could check out Elliott's stats as a Flyer.

ES SV% .926 (9th out of 42 goalies with 40 GP)

PP SV% .817 (40th out of 42 goalies with 40 GP)

Neuvirth's numbers are almost identical - .925 & .812. So what does it tell you when your two main goalies from the past 100+ games are very good at ES, and bottom of the league on the PK? That the penalty killers are giving up glorious chance after glorious chance; the same thing the eye test tells us.

Carchidi reported Hextall was trying to sign Stastny in the off season but he chose Vegas instead.

Also, fwiw, the plan may have been to go Elliott/Lyon but Lyon got hurt early.

Either way, this team is good enough to make the playoffs as is and I expect them to do it even if Fletcher doesn't make any significant trades.

The defense will turn it around. Elliott/Stolarz doesn't look so bad if Elliott can get and stay healthy.

PK still needs work.

That's fine, but it didn't work. We've seen enough by now to know that G-C-K should be the line you don't mess with.

How do they continue to delay the rookie struggles every player goes through? Not meant in a snarky way either, just a question.

Ghost, Provy, Sanheim, Hagg, TK, OL, NoPa are all players with less than 3 years experience in the league.

Morin has been hurt a ton over past year so they couldn't really bring him up.

And the goals at ES aren't on the goalies or the dmen 100% as a good number of them start when the other team breaks out of their d zone.

Clean up the team defense, backchecking and Penalty Kill and the goalies will probably be less of an issue. I tend to agree with MJL it's more of a player execution thing than coaching.
