I dont see Sprong fitting in that system all that well actually, not with the head coach they have. If he gets time in the top 6 his production will definitely go up but will he and stay there?

Aberg is doing well on the top line atm. Carlyle is the type of coach to put out multiple centers for D zone draws. Sprong will see PP2 time and more offensive ice time with a better center than Cullen/Sheahan

1 thing that was brought up quite a few times when Hagelin was traded was how our PK was gonna suffer from it a lot. If you don’t count the day after the trade or I guess the 1st game without Hagelin the pens are perfect (100%) on the PK without hags.

The PK is obviously important, but I'm willing to make sacrifices on the PK if it means we're a better team at 5v5 up until the point where the PK actively blows.

Fantasy question: who’s the best short-term options in goal? I’ve got Vasilevskiy on IR. Other goalies are Quick, Howard, and McElhinney. What do you guys think? Luongo is available as well. I’m a Lu fan so it’s hard not to nab him. I also only want to run 2 tendies when Vas comes back
So basically, who should be my unheralded 2nd goalie?

Blatant "reffing the score" costs the Pens a goal there.

Well I think those are different problems.

Problem with the quick strike/counter attack team is that the roster isn’t constructed to play that style of hockey. The pens are sorely lacking players that make good first breakout passes.

They also have dmen who suck at in zone coverage which forces the forwards to come low to help. Which completely takes one or two forwards away from “quick strike” transitions. Leaving whoever gets the puck for the break to two options: the one guy at the blue line for the outlet pass or dump it to center ice and let the guys regroup.

Problem with this is, if they do get it to the one guy for the breakout, all the other players are too deep to get up into the rush so the one forward going 1 on 2 or 3 just dumps and chases, eliminated any potential quick strikes.

It’s both a system problem as well as a roster problem in my opinion.

The odd man breaks are problems with bad pinches by the dmen.

Losing guys in the scoring area is just a personnel problem. You’re roster is constructed of players that suck at defense and get lost in the D zone.

I consider a counter attack team as one that derives offense off the trap or whatever a team uses that allows their opponents to freely start an attack out of their defensive zone. Whereas quick strike is off a pressing forecheck. But that is splitting hairs.

The bottom line is everyone must play defense and in hockey all offense starts with defense. Even a center ice faceoff starts with both teams in defensive positions. Anyone can play defense, it is a mindset that takes hard work and sacrifice.

Having said that you do not have to sacrifice offense for defense, but you do have to know when it is prudent to sacrifice defense for offense. This team has too many players that ignore defense.
