Was DeMar Derozan traded, even after he was convinced he wouldn't be? GMs have an obligation to improve the team and if an opportunity presents itself, a "promise" doesn't get priority.
Fact is, Dubas is very smart and he's not going to show his hand. He'll say what he's saying to make Nylander even more valuable than he already is. But make no mistake, if there's a deal on the table that improves the team, Dubas' obligation is to improve the team and he'd be stupid not to do it. - Unholy_Goalie
If Dubas doesn't intend to stick to what he said. Then it's a pretty stupid thing to put out. |

Look at the numbers, Dubas CAN sign everyone. The only tight squeeze is next season and then they are home free. Don't buy this media B.S. Nylander is staying. |

Of course they do. They talk with, probably with a healthy half of the other teams, on a regular basis. That's their job ffs!
This should not be a secret |

Not if it helps him in trade negotiations which it would if Dubas makes it seem Nylander is "protected" as opposed to having him openly on the block.
It's also partially a response to the media saying they wanted to trade Nylander so he's trying to quell that chatter for this season. |

Dubas promised him that if it got to the point that he wouldn't see regular ice time, he'd trade him.
So it looks like he's keeping his word. - GreatGigInTheSky
But lying to Nylander. Clever |

You don't tell a player that to their face and then tell the entire world and then go back on it.
Dubas cares about his reputation I'm sure. |

Yup, especially if Marleau retires on July 2nd, 2019 in Arizona.
What he can't do, however, is put more money into the blueline because so much of it will be tied up with the forwards. |

So again, tomorrow, Columbus offers Seth Jones. Dubas says no? I'd (frank)ing hope not.
Nylander isn't on the block but if there's a deal that makes the team better, he'd be a complete idiot not to make it.
He should care a lot more about making the team better.
But what does Dubas have to say about this supposed promise?
“The discussion that William and I had had a couple of times was a fear of his … that he was being signed to be traded,” Dubas told Bob McCown and Stephen Brunt on Prime Time Sports. “And my discussion with him, I just affirmed with him that that was not our intention whatsoever.
“Our intention was that as long as I was here that I saw him as a part of the Toronto Maple Leafs.”
Maybe just a bit less committed than what’s out there (Dubas chose his words carefully – teams make decisions every now and then that they certainly never had any “intentions” of doing), and Elliotte Friedman has mentioned that he believes this season will be Nylander’s last in Toronto. |

Poulin said he'd be very surprised if he played this week.
I'd hope he'd play against Boston because it's Boston.
But they did get rid of Leivo (and his secret cocaine problem) so he technically could play against his brother and Buffalo. |

You're actually comparing Leivo to Nylander? - TrashPanda
I don't know if he's making a comparison, It's different. Dubas promised Leivo that if he fell out of the top 12, he'd find him a better opportunity and in trading to Van, he did. |

26.5 million in cap space, 32.75 if Marleau retires in Arizona.

Leivo was never in the top 12, he was always borderline.
I had hoped he would be traded sooner, he deserves a place to play. That was never going to happen with the Leafs. |

I agree with that. Nylander finally re-signing sealed Leivo's fate. |
