Exactly, Leivo is a good player. I have been supportive of Dubas, but this is a clear bad move IMO. - Archaic
I think it’s just a courtesy to leivo. Won’t make it as a regular here, so get what you can for him. I think it would’ve been a loss for whoever the gm was. |

I have no doubt that Pridham had a big hand in it. Nylander getting $17 in the next 8 months helps him a lot and lowers the cap number.. I think it's a win/win.. - PatC80
Can you imagine being that young, playing a game, and getting that much cash?

Marner wants to play for league minimum, but the NHLPA won't let him. - Atomic Wedgie
It's out of his hands Wedgie. Marner and Matthews have no say whatsoever in contract negotiations. That is why they have agents.
I already hate that narrative. That hate is only going to get worse. |

I don't believe the cap number is lowered, comparing the total salary to years, and the cap hit on capfriendly.
That was the thought when the discussion was about signing the contract 2 months into the season.
Unfortunately, that reality didn't happen when most of the contract became signing bonuses.
On the other hand, the signing bonuses favour the Leafs if they need to trade Nylander. - Aetherial
and if there is a lockout....he gets his money before the season starts |

Do you know what happens to the cap hit if Marleau decides to pull the plug and retire instead of playing his last year at $6 M? |

I absolutely agree.
I think when doing the initial evaluation on numbers, you look at how it's going to benefit the team in saving money, but the opportunity that the Leafs had was to, instead, use that to provide Nylander with term and dollars, while keeping the cap to the number they didn't want to exceed.
My original thinking was that you'd hit that number (say 6.9), and it would offset as 6.5.
I don't think that $400k would have come in handy enough in other serious negotiations to matter. Marner / Matthews aren't going to be strung up by that, I don't think.

It's a 35+ contract, so you're dinged with it.
Marleau, if I recall does get less this year, something like 4 million. I think he salary was only something like $1.5m, so if you wanted to trade his cap hit to someone to help them hit the cap floor, you could. But he would have to want to retire and he'd have to approve the deal, because he also has a full NMC. |
