So cap's up by another 3.5 next year. Up another 2-4m the next year.
I mean, c'mon, we get Marner at 10-10.5 and Auston at 12-13 and I think we'll be ok within a couple years for any other signings(Such as Andersen)
But seriously once this team wins a cup I'm done watching pro sports...thinking of getting a life or something. - AngryWhiteMale

Think about it, like really think about it. All we really need is an upgrade on Hainsey. Do you think it will cost more than $7M to get an upgrade on Hainsey?
Rielly has been great. Dermott has been really good. Zaitsev has had a decent bounce back season. Ozhiganov has been better than I thought he would be.. We still have Gardiner, but if he goes it's likely Liljegren or Sandin can replace him. |

No, you think about it. Like, actually think about it.
Hainsey needs to be replaced. Gardiner needs to be re-signed or replaced. Zaitsev is pretty garbage. Rielly has been very good offensively but defensively, not the best, could use a strong defensive player to compliment him who can kill penalties and play top pairing minutes. That's not a cheap player. Ozhiganov isn't all that great either. Dermott is good but still taking time to round out and should be an example that Sandin and Liljegren are still years away from being dependable top-four players.
So yeah, the defense needs work and it's pretty unlikely it gets fixed with chump change. You still didn't name defenders they could sign that would help fix these problems or their price tags. |

Approximately 3.5, up to 83 million. - Unholy_Goalie
Nah
It'll go up $86M and people will cry foul, "East coast bias," "Leafs favoritism" and "conspiracy" given the timing of Toronto's upcoming contracts.
Book it. |

Nah, cant have johnsson up on the 1st line.
They may test out kap on the left side on the 1st.
Either way, johnsson doesnt belong there. |

could happen sooner if the Leafs win the Holy Grail of Hockey this season. |

Yeah, pretty dumb to have Johnsson on the 1st line with how Kapanen has been playing this year and the fact that he's good buddies with Nylander. Shouldn't be much of a problem for him to play on the LW (even though a lot of people here said it was crazy in the off season). Maybe Nylander could try it too. |

You're right. Leafs have given up the 4th fewest goals. That's unacceptable.. We should upgrade on Rielly too.

Maybe the contract was structured like that so he could get traded to a contender if the Leafs ended up sucking
In fact, it's quite obvious - TheMussel
I think there is a possibility that he has an agreement with the Leafs to waive the NMC and be traded, then retire. If his intent was only to play 2 more years, this would have been attractive to him at the time.
If he decides to play, we have to figure one of Zaitzev/Gardiner is gone and one of Kapanen/Johnsson is gone, probably Brown is gone, Marner and Matthews will have to sign reasonable deals... and even after all that, we will be icing like 4 minimum-wage Marlies.
It isn't impossible that they keep all the major pieces, but it won't be easy.
... and we should all be thankful that they have this problem, instead of having no future |

That would be an excellent scenario. A lot of winning teams have that old guy looking to win one before he retires. Would be a nice story and great for the cap situation too. Not sure this is the year though if they're going to keep giving up 40 shots a game. |

You're right, after 27 regular season games, the Leafs defense is undoubtedly one of the greatest of all-time.

Aye aye Cap'n.
Jordie Benn is better than Hainsey
Nick Jensen is better than Hainsey
David Savard is better than Hainsey
I don't think any of those 3 will cost more than Nylander |
