I don't think there's been enough conversation about trading Nylander now that he's signed.
We should really do more of that guys. Especially after Dubas apparently just promised him he wouldn't as long as he was GM of the Leafs.
We need at least 10 pages of incomprehensible trading Nylander arguments before this blog will feel like a real Leafs blog on hockeybuzz. I think we're around half way there. |

The contract structure is pretty obvious. - Unholy_Goalie
To you certainly. And it does lend itself to that.
But still why would he give up a NMC to NOT play with Marner/Matthews/Nylander and be part of a contending team? Seems more likely he wouldn't than he'd make some backroom CBA contravening deal and get his bonus and retire while he still probably feels he can contribute?
Interesting concept.
Maybe a poll for other posters? Who feels Marleau would have made that deal to get his money and then retire (which I still think leaves him on Leaf's Cap) vs. staying on the roster and playing on a Stanley cup contender? |

Maybe the contract was structured like that so he could get traded to a contender if the Leafs ended up sucking
In fact, it's quite obvious - TheMussel
THIS.
It gave him a way out in the third year. He was taking a big chance with the Leafs when he signed. If he's healthy and able to play then he remains on the ice. |

well, 'they' would know exactly how much there's to spend. Gotta learn to trust the client sometimes, f'n lawyer - 21peter
Very much. They do know exactly how much room they need for the bonuses - they ARE experts at it. They had to put off some of last years bonuses to count against this years cap.
Meant more for the Non-experts here who don't seem to be aware of this and think they can spend ALL of this years Cap Space at the TDL to go for it now. |

I think Marleau agreed to that deal for 2 reasons. 1- because it was likely the best offer he got
2- Leafs give him the best shot at winning a Cup |

If this team was dogpoop, Marleau might be tempted to waive his NMC and do UG's conspiracy theory level plan.
With the team being a possible cup contender and Marleau still playing relatively well, I see no possibility of him wanting to leave until his contract is up. Why would he do that? He has no reason what so ever to want to go to somewhere like AZ rather than playing the game he loves for another season with a cup contending team.
UG was so dead set on the idea that Tavares wouldn't be ruled by emotion enough that he'd consider the Leafs as a FA destination. Cause apparently for hockey players it's all about taxes and their best chance to win, which supposedly wasn't with TO.
Yet now, less than a year later, he thinks Marleau is going to waive his NMC and go to some poop team like AZ just out of the kindness of his heart to help the Leafs with their cap problems so they can maybe win a cup without him. Sure. |

Exactly. So the odds of him deciding to retire and not play with this young group with a chance to win the cup, and to do so voluntarily in some back-room handshake deal two years ago just doesn't seem likely to be true. Don't expect he will retire. Not why he signed here. |

Agreed. That's why I see UGs handshake deal to retire early as a far fetched conspiracy type theory rather than a likely scenario. |

Sounds like quite the conspiracy. Completely ignore that Matthews, Marner, Kadri, Rielly all really love Marleau. Sorry boys, I love you guys too, but I agreed to leave after 2 years for cap reasons. |

If they love him so much why don't they marry him?
Oh wait, he's already married with 100 kids?
Okay.
How about just take less money (6.25 AAV less)?
Oh, they won't do that either? |

He has to go. We drafted 3 stars and developed them. Break them up. Can't have that nonsense. These guys aren't even in their prime and they're all bust nuts in the playoffs
What we need is a RHD. Someone who is closer to 30 years old. Anyone agree? |

He wouldn't be the first player to retire before his official contract ran out and he probably won't be the last.
What if he and his wife agreed, only two more years? |

Should probably start by rectifying that mighty mistake Mark Hunter made and trade Marner for Dylan Strome. |
