It doesn't because it just increases Nylander's value. He's not showing his hand. Just like Lou taught him. Remember when Leivo didn't request a trade? Oh, guess he's gone now though.

He is really good, yes and that should include making any deal to improve the team.

- Unholy_Goalie

You're actually comparing Leivo to Nylander?

Willie is correct. He wont get traded so long as Dubas is GM.
Nothing wrong with that.

We'll see if he still is, 6 years from now.

Dubas promised him that if it got to the point that he wouldn't see regular ice time, he'd trade him.

So it looks like he's keeping his word.

Was DeMar Derozan traded, even after he was convinced he wouldn't be? GMs have an obligation to improve the team and if an opportunity presents itself, a "promise" doesn't get priority.

Fact is, Dubas is very smart and he's not going to show his hand. He'll say what he's saying to make Nylander even more valuable than he already is. But make no mistake, if there's a deal on the table that improves the team, Dubas' obligation is to improve the team and he'd be stupid not to do it.

I think there's at least 5 players on Winterpeg better than Laine. Yeah, he's a fantastic goal scorer, but that's it.

I can see him asking for at least $10 million. And I don't think he's worth it.

- GreatGigInTheSky

Considering scoring goals is usually considered a highly regarded asset among hockey people in the nhl, laine will get 9.5 - 10.5 easily.

But who are the 5 players you feel are better than laine on the peg?

William Nylander: “Kyle has told me multiple times that as long as he’s here he’s not going to trade me.”

Ooooo Uggie, where art thou?

Not the first a gm has said that.

Masai flatout said that there was a misunderstanding between he and Derozan in what was said. So while Derozan thought one thing was said, it actually wasn't.

That was a case of not being clear. Not a guy going back on his word.

"Misunderstanding" is a nice PR move. It's bullpoop. He saw a great opportunity, he pounced on it like a good GM should. The same would happen with Nylander.

If tomorrow Columbus offers Seth Jones for Nylander, you think Dubas says "Well, sorry, I can't. I said I wouldn't trade Nylander"? (frank) no he doesn't.

He's also completely useless everywhere else on the ice. I agree that'll he'll probably get around that much, just don't think he's worth it.

Shifielifieiieeee
Wheeler
Connor
Byfuglien
Hellebyuck

I think they're all easily better than Laine. And before this season I would probably have had Ehlers on that list, too. But he's been subpar this season, imo.

Exactly.

Also means nothing if Marner and Matthews get more than Dubas expects them to get and has to make cap moves.

It's their intention to keep them together but nobody has a gun to his head either. Things change and he'd have to adapt to those changes to make sure he does what's best for the team.

And if he doesn't, then Shanahan might.

If the Leafs can't win in the playoffs and it's obvious they have to upgrade the defense or upgrade something else and he refuses to move Nylander, would that make you happy?

Things change all the time in the NHL. What he says and does today might not work tomorrow and if he's good at his job, he'll adapt and do what needs to be done to improve the team above the needs of the individual.
