I think you have to keep Kessel & Malkin together because Phil can play with no one else. I have actually liked Pearson since he has gotten here. Not a great skater like Hagelin, but he holds his own and keeps it together on that line.

I think your top 6 is set. You cannot break up the Crosby line, it has been the only line capable of playing in the NHL lately. The Pearson-Malkin-Kessel line aint great right now, but like I said, you cannot change it. You just have to keep them together and let them play out of the bad spell they are on.

Third line you have Rust/Brassard/Sprong in my opinion. Given Brassard a good player that is where he needs to be (Rust) and give him a scorer (Sprong). Sprong is in the dog house, but he needs to be in the Top 9 or trade him. He isn't going to get you anything on the 4th line and wasting his potential is stupid. They did the same thing with Pouliot and destroyed him and his potential trade value. The third line has goal skilling capabilities while being defensively solid. That is all you can ask for in a 3rd line.

Fourth line leaves guys like Simon/Sheahan/ZAR. I have liked ZAR so I think he deserves a jersey every night. Sheahan I think has also gotten the bad end of the stick this season due to coaching decisions. He is light years ahead of Matt Cullen & Grant. No idea why Sullivan has played both guys over him, but with Cullen out, this shouldn't even be a decision on Sullivan's end. Grant gives you nothing important. I dont like Simon, he has shown me something more than I gave him credit for, but I still consider him nothing more than a below average skilled guy with an above average hockey sense. A fringe NHL player at best.

That's pretty much how I want the lines as well minus Sprong. I think we need to go out and get Brass a winger. But no reason not to try Sprong there for now.

If its Montour, Ritchie, or Silfverberg coming back to PIT I will be ecstatic.

Which means its probably going to be Sprong for Rowney.

Trading for Silfverberg with Sprong would be ill-advised IMO. Trading a young guy with upside for a pending UFA is never a good idea IMO.

Defensive help would def be nice.

That's a pretty underwhelming return. I think we all hoped Sprong+ would land us something better.

If nothing else, we traded one weird looking dude for another.

Wow, so they gave up on Sprong but still think Grant, Cullen, Wilson, etc. are all NHL caliber players...and what do they get back? Oh another defensemen to add to the logjam created by the JJ debacle!

So I guess he'll (Pettersson) sit now in the press box or AHL, and pick up pointers from JJ video?!

He's been playing in the NHL though. I dunno, this feels like we added another Defenseman on par with our other 15 bottom pair D.

Sprong definitely has a higher ceiling. But reading some scouting reports, he at least is a good skater.

Actually it feels a lot like we traded Sprong for Rikkola.

FYI

October 2018 – Pettersson has left off where he ended last year, on the big club. With Anaheim wanting to play a more up-tempo, faster game, look for Pettersson to be in the line up more often and to jump in on the rush. He picked his spots during preseason and contributed an assist and was a plus two. He’ll be a depth option for your fantasy team as he contributes to blocks and sprinkles in the hits. Lucas Main

March 2018 – Pettersson made his NHL debut on February 15th and became a main stay in the Anaheim line up after they did not pick up another defenseman at the trade deadline and it looks like they made the right call in keeping him. He has played in 16 games so far and his confidence is growing with each game he plays. He has the ability to move the puck and once he adds some more muscle to his frame (he is only 21 years old) he will develop into a solid two-way defenseman. With Beauchemin and Bieksa not expected to be back next season, Pettersson will be a main stay in the Anaheim line up. Lucas Main

Something's got to give because all the weight can't fall on Geno and Sid's shoulders for much longer, if at all. And Malkin has been brutal lately.

Our asset management is so poor, whether that means trading future picks away or giving up on prior draft picks. drafting/scouting or player development, or realistically both are holding the team back at this point and will continue to do so.

Regarding the recent trade, I know nothing about the guy we got besides his stat line. Also, I wonder who will sit? Probably rikolla but should be maata for how bad he's been.

I dont think the trade was 'bad'. I think the value is close. I just dont get why bottom pair LHD would be the target unless, as you mentioned, Maatta or another D is getting traded. If Maatta was traded for a equal value/age middle six winger, this could be a good move.

edit: Also I am skewed by the fact that I personally really like a lot of players on the Anaheim roster and we got one I barely know haha.

He did have a few games he put up 20 minutes of ice time and did play on Anaheim's powerplay a bit. He could be a good 3rd/2nd pairing guy. It also also allows us to ship a D man and a forward out and allows us to possibly replace them with him as a cheaper cap hit option (if he excels). It also would be nice to lose a big contract on the defensive side of things. He does look to be much like Sprong except defensively. He was said to be the steal of the draft, but was buried behind depth so his chances on the ice were limited. I feel it was a good lateral move much like the Hagelin deal (I hope this one also works out well). I am also hoping he can pull another one or 2 lateral change of scenery trades that work for the team. I definitely do not think he is done trading this week though

They have to get some more offensive support, if not then just pack it in.

I'm fine with Brass riding out the season as 3C and walking in FA but get the dude some support.

I really thought somehow JR would bring Faulk to Pitt.
