His value was higher in the summer then it is now. Can he have a crazy season and increase value yes. But with this contract holdout hurt his value. Also teams would think if they trade for him in summer they could get better contract. Could they prolly not but GMs have big EGOs. Also, I think the leafs being good is good for hockey. Bigger salary cap and it is fun to watch sabres and leafs being good at the same time. Cant wait for Sabres to put a smoke the leafs Tomorrow. - BigDog912
Again, you keep saying what you “hope” is true. And it’s hillarious to all of us here.
Oh, and leaf fans don’t care about Buffalo. It’s another game for us fans...you can care all you want it doesn’t make it a rivalry. |

As a reply to this,
Nylander Contract Structure
2018: 10,277,778
2019-2024: 6,962,366
Is this how Dubas and his bookies were able to make it work for both Nylander and the Leafs? What are your thoughts on how the deal went down, how it’s structured and did he have to miss all those games for the deal to go down as it did?
I just wanted to comment on this question because I keep hearing how the Leafs signed him to a $6.96M a year contract (I am not referring to anyone here just in general) which is not the case even though that is how the cap average comes out for Seasons 2-6. Everyone is conveniently forgetting the $10.2M cap hit for this year. But to answer your question I do think he had to miss all that time for his contract to be structured like that. If he would have signed a 6 year $45M contract before the Season started his cap hit for All years would be $7.5M a year. Nylander waiting, although not ideal, worked out best for both parties because Nylander got his $7.5M and the Leafs got a lower Cap hit for all the years that actually matter. - Sabrehagan
The contract worked out perfectly for the Leafs.
The bigger cap issue is next year and getting Willy at 6.9mill (regardless of what it is this year) is huge for the Leafs with Matthews and Marner coming up.
Big win on this signing for the Leafs - no matter what other team's salty fans might think. |

Yeah teams dont care about cancers in the locker room. He will have to work on changing his image first to increase his value. - BigDog912
I guess you haven't been hearing what all his teammates have been saying leading up to the signing...
Again, just showing you saltiness.

Are you guys really trying to spin this off as leafs did good job here. This was terrible management by Dubas and leafs. They should of traded him in off season when his value was the highest. And you honestly think their is not going to be ill will between leafs and willy. This was an embarrassment for the league. The only positive is Dubas didn't give in and give him what he wanted. If he gave him 8mil + then i think we would be seeing a lot more holdouts going forward. - BigDog912

Honestly at this point... might as well be.
I like browntown but he's on pace for 20 something points and makes over 2 million.
If there's a deal for him where we get a reasonable return, like 4th or 5th round pick, I think you gotta do it. - TheMussel
Brown doesn't make that much in his next contract. He got 2 for his upside from having that 20 goal season. Turns out it was a fluke. |

I hope he goes somewhere like Edmonton, where he's almost a shoe in to get top 6 minutes and undo some of the career damage that 2 years in the press box caused. |

The entire Willy scenario was pre-planned right from the Start...
The only way they could pay Willy what he wanted and stay under
the magic 7.0M number was to do it this way...
He gets 10.2M for this year playing 2/3 of a season !!!
Bravo Willy !!!
Leafs get cap-hit with 6.9M years 2 thru 6 !!!
Bravo Kyle !!! |

Except he didn't get his 7.5 mill. That 10.2 cap hit is NOT ACTUAL REAL DOLLARS GOING TO NYLANDER.

I think Nylander's camp was reaching for as much as possible. In the end, it is a 7.5 million/yr contract, which is probably right in the middle of where each out started out. Not surprised he sat out the whole time, in hindsight. He was seemingly willing to risk a trade to stand his ground.
Everyone says that he had no leverage, but ultimately subtracting his skill set from this team, especially this year, would be a big hit... considering they look like they're going to make a splash. - TheMussel
No it IS NOT a 7.5mill/yr Contract. It is the 6.9. The 10.2 is pro-rating this years money for 3/5 of so of a season as if it was the same rate over a whole season. He doesn't actually get 10.2 this year and doesn't get more than the 41.change overall of 6.9/yr avg. |
