I kind of want the Leafs to find other stuff to trade for D upgrades along with developing guys in the system. Not necessarily one big ticket guy. They have their Norris quality guy in Rielly now because of drafting and developing.
This way, they can keep Nylander and go for the Pittsburgh style win, where they nuke teams with overwhelming, multi-headed monster offense and great goaltending, and they don't need a monster D.
Still saying they need upgrades to the D, but they don't need to go all-in on buying high on one guy. - Zezel
Ok big question for everyone:
Which of all the elite big named D men in last two years have propelled their team to cup or made a huge impact?
Penns already got here without Letang
There are many more such stories and yes there are good players out there
My favourite is Erik Karlsson. He’s not up to snuff this year but he’s on an old team. He had 9 shots on goal against senators. Him I will always like cuz I know what he can bring. Him I definitely would fit in. By marleau by hainsey |

Yet having a Matthews, Tavares, Marner and Nylander...along with Kadri, and Kap
And let's not forget Rielly on D
The offensive speed game is the way of the now - Zezel
Game changes in the playoffs. Washington scored last year but they're a big, bruising team too. And you can talk about offensive speed all you want but Tampa Bay has just as much power as the Leafs up front, with a better goalie and a better defense. Adding Pietrangelo would go a long way to balancing the blueline. |

Bullpoop. Leafs have more firepower now than even T Bay.
Defence nod goes to Tampa, but Andersen is proving to be a top 5 goalie so far this year. |

I concur.
Trading for D is too expensive. Pietrangelo for Nylander is such a bad deal. One guy's exiting his prime, the other guy is not even there yet. One guy is signed to a very reasonable long-term contract, the other guy's an expiring deal about to head into FA.

Blues may want to keep him but they're a poop team and they've been progressively getting worse every year. Again, if you're Pietrangelo, do you want to stay there long term if winning isn't even an option? And at that point, do the Blues let him walk for nothing? I seriously doubt they do and then they start looking for younger players in return for Pietrangelo so he doesn't walk for nothing. - Unholy_Goalie
Still 100% speculation not based on any facts. Nice fantasy but not real yet. |

False. Tavares is the same age. And there's so many examples of top end defenders playing well into their mid 30s without issue. If Hainsey can play until he's 38, Pietrangelo will be just fine at 29-35. |

Doesn't mean they need to lose a trade to acquire a better RHD. The Leafs could get away with adding a 2nd tier defenceman and bumping Hainsey down. Improved defence and still have Yeslander to add to an already elite offence. - BetterCallSaul

The possibility and the opportunity is there. If it materializes, the Leafs should definitely get involved. |

This is my concern dude. If there's a D who is younger and more prime-friendly in terms of cap I'd look at it harder. |

Sure, and there's no reason to think Dubas and his team wouldn't be on top of it if Pietrangelo wanted to move on, and the Blues want to rebuild without an elite RHD as a starting point.
In any case I would think this Nylander for Pietrangelo discussion can be put to bed until those things occur.

Nope. Gotta trade Nylander because reasons. Doesn’t matter the return, just trade him. |
