The long term ramifications of the deal seem perfectly structured for Nylander to be dealt next summer. With Dubas having to re-sign both Marner and Matthews, year two of the contract is nearly all signing bonus ($8.3 Million) and very little in base salary ($700,000), which means after July 1, a team would be acquiring a 23-year-old top-six winger for nearly league-minimum money and the next four years at $6 Million per season. That scenario would be similar to last summer’s Ryan O’Reilly trade, where Buffalo agreed in principle to a deal with St. Louis in late June and traded him after paying a $7 Million bonus on July 1.
Yup, Nylander for Pietrangelo on July 2nd, 2019, the same day Marleau retires in Arizona. - Unholy_Goalie
Seems good! Dubas obviously strutted contract with pridham leaving a way out at July 1st star signing bonus payout. Marleau off the books would be huge as well. How much longer is hainsey with us? One more year at $3M

Now that I have a Nylander watch, I can't wait for the Marner watch and Matthews watch to round out my collection.
Screw the Gardiner watch...probably runs backwards or something.

Not enough value but even if it was, then you really can't fit them under the cap with Nylander's cap hit. That's why Nylander is the perfect trade chip. He has very good value but he also opens up cap space to sign the #1 RHD.

You have an awful take on things. Have you ever been right about anything Leafs related

Who are you trying to kid - besides yourself? Pietrangelo has 11 points as of today - tied for 50th and is a brutal -8 on a team that is defense first and has little offence. Ron Hainsey a 37 year old making $3 million and at best is our 4th or 5th best defender has 11 points and is a plus 16 on an offence first team this year for (frank) sakes. Tell me again why you want to trade Nylander a top six right winger on any NHL team in the league for that? - winsix
2nd worst team in the NHL. That's not Pietrangelo's fault. The coaching has sucked and the goaltending has sucked; two problems the Leafs have not had. Pietrangelo has consistently been among the best defenders in the NHL for the past 5-7 years. He puts up points, he has a big body, he can play a lot of minutes and he can play defense. You clearly just have no clue how good Pietrangelo really is if you're so foolishly trying to compare him to Hainsey, who has been (frank)ing terrible this year and progressively getting worse. You want to talk about a real "washed up" player, it's Hainsey, not Pietrangelo. It's (frank)ing hilarious you'd think Pietrangelo was "washed up" as you said earlier and yet Tavares, who is the same age, is what exactly?

Nylander for Pietrangelo would be a bad trade for the Leafs. Pass.

The Toronto Maple Leafs once again relied on their powerhouse offense and the goaltending of Frederik Andersen to salvage them from an effort where the opposition appeared to be the better team
So the Leafs relied on themselves to win the game? If the other team was better they would have won...

Maybe there are just so oooo many things you are wrong about that it's hard to remember them fee things you are right about. Even a stopped clock tells the right time twice a day.

Except if Pietrangelo declines and his extension becomes an albatross, and Nylander is a PPG star, that's a way - Zezel
Or Pietrangelo stabilizes the Leafs defense on the right side with his 25+ minutes per game and Nylander is a 60 point player without Matthews. It's really easy to play this game you're playing. Reality is though, Pietrangelo is in his prime and exactly what the Leafs need. It'd be a fair hockey trade that could benefit both teams.
