Too bad for the Loafs - overpaid by about $1M - still didn't fix the "D". I can't wait for the implosion in TO next summer when the have to start jettisoning players / contracts without a cup. Can you say 52 and counting ?

I was thinking the same thing. Imagine what's going to happen once they pay Matthews 10+ mil and Marner...

The cap is coming ...

Probably not. The salary cap is likely to go up and because of Horton's contract, the Leafs should be able to make due.

I'd be curious to see what the cap penalty for buying out Marleau is vs. the cap penalty for exceeding the salary cap in the summer is (and then going back under the cap after Horton is allowed on LTIR)

- torfc23

Easy to figure out the Marleau buyout, 3/4 of 6.25 spread out over 2 years... so 2.5 million or so on the cap for the next 2 season

That's less than Pasta's deal with the bump in salary cap put in.

So a savings of 3.75 next year at the cost of 2.5 of dead space in the year after. Honestly the cap penalty for being over with Horton until LTIR might be better.

Yeah, but he very little leverage, skipped his "bridge deal" despite not being a franchise player, and sets himself up for another big payday down the road. Not bad for him.

Some guys take the bridge deal for 2 years and then sign their 6-7 year big contract, but then they don't get the 2nd big payday since they start declining when 31 or 32 years old.

Everyone will be skipping the bridge deal now. That's the new NHL.

I predicted he'd sign for 6 years 7 million. Pretty close to that.

A fair contract.

I mean nothing is stopping them from trading him. He can be traded at any time. If they want to trade him they can. If they spend most the game with posession you can probably survive without improving the D

That guy is just dopey and so obvious!!

Leafs will have to let Gardiner go but will be fine...have some nice pieces coming up from the Marlies and Dermott is also gonna be a nice replacement.....

It's kind of crazy though. Everyone knows GM's are afraid to offer sheet RFA's so the GM's should hold more leverage. Especially in the Leafs situation where they were playing just fine without Willie. Very different situation than Calgary trying to play without Gaudreau a few years ago or the Canucks trying to play without Horvat last year, those teams need those players more than the Leafs need Nylander.

Not just that. Players feel like a lockout is coming. They want to protect themself if that happens. A guy like Nylander gets screwed hard if a lockout happens and he doesnt get a deal like this. Sure you are fine if you are JT and collected an 11 million dollar bonus but for guys making 500k, it is a huge hit.

Nylander probably could have had this deal on day 1....

In the end, the hold out was just stupid - there was no way he was going to get that reported $8M+ deal and the Leafs got the $ to where they needed it to be.

Time to move on.....Leafs lineup is crazy good.

I suggested a solution to your problem (and future problems). Signing Nylander to 7 million is a loss since they originally offered him 6x6. Nylander won the deal.

My statement still stands. Cap Hell awaits...

I've heard his gloves are starting make him itch, but has always fancied a job in the Leafs player development department

You don't understand leverage. The leafs had two choices.
1) Give into Nylander's demands.
2) Trade him away.

It was clear that the Leafs weren't going to get full value for Nylander, so they picked option 1.

Yes I know Keith for Nylander is an unfair deal, but sometimes trades are unfair when your back is to the wall.

The Hawks gave up 2 second rounders for a guy who missed the entire season. They ended up winning the cup that year...

Yeah,I think there's about 25 teams the Leafs should approach before Chicago.
