I just don't get it. The Leafs are in a position to be a Cup contender for the next number of years and, if they were to win, he could be immortal as a result.

Honestly, this just seems so (frank)ing shortsighted by the kid if he does opt out of the season. Guaranteed he's played his last game as a Leaf if that decision has been made...

My only thought is that he feels if he waits until Matthews and Marner are due, then he will somehow get some of their share.... maybe he thinks he won't lag behind them if the Leafs have to sign all 3 at the same time.

I really hope for his sake that isn't what he is thinking. Matthews and Marner will get what they get regardless.

I dont hate the salary cap. What I hate is the lack of flexibility within it and that it appears to almost punish teams for drafting and developing well.

The Leafs are 100% done with him if he does not sign today. They will not simply pick this up next year. He will be gone by the draft.
