So we have 5.1M in cap space (more by trade deadline), but the expiring contracts for RHD look kinda meh. I doubt TBL let Stralman go to a rival, EK will sign with SJ I'm sure.

I think they need to earmark a large portion of that for ELC bonuses as well, or else it eats into their available money for next year, which is already an issue.

Doubt he leaves - he will be the next captain after he signs. Think of the best players in the league. Does McDavid love Edmonton? Does Sid love Pittsburgh? Does OV adore Washington? I doubt it very much in each case. Very hard for a franchise player to move in his prime or before. We should see before the deadline.

Agreed.

I hope you didn't miss the sarcasm

I just wish nylander wasn't our 6th best player so he could earn his contract. Too bad we have too many good players. Sucks to be a Leafs fan.

Burke would have signed Alzner for 6mil, drafted Nick Ritchie and dealt the Matthews pick for Max Pacioretty.

Thing is...ennis makes tthat 4th line noticeable. ..and he's actually busting his assistant and playing some great hockey. I don't weven notice that he's a failed top 6er trying to fit into a bottom 6 role. Rather I see a tenacious player...and if you'd told me that's what we'd be getting from ennis when we signed him I would have said you were nuts. Translated he's won me over.
- mykokes

I freely admit I questioned the signing of Ennis - thought it was stupid - they should have simply given him a PTO (in my opinion). The putting Ennis on the first line thing was just stupid in my opinion...

while I agree he's become an effective 4th player, he's kind won me over in that role, I don't believe he has the ability to be effective higher in the lineup - and he can't kill penalties or take faceoffs effective. That limits his ability to stick in the lineup. If the Leafs trade a winger, Johnsson, Brown, Kapanen(Doubt it) then I could see him sticking in the line-up, possibly on the 3rd line - but no higher.

when Matthews came back in the lineup it was pretty obvious that one of Lindholm or the Goat would be the odd man out.

with Nylander drawing back in the lineup I don't see Babcock taking another center who's capable of penalty killing out of the lineup over Ennis.... not likely

What do you do with the in-between guys?

I think we get Kapanen on a decent bridge, I am not sure about Johnsson (isn't he getting near UFA age in a couple years?) Do we get them for similar deals to Hyman/Brown?

- Aetherial

with Nylander coming back ... one of those guys becomes expendable trade bait...

personally, I don't think they move Kapanen as he has by far the most upside and unique skill set.... so either Johnsson or Brown are moved if the right type of deal for a D-man comes along.

I couldn't sleep last night thinking about the complications of signing Willy, with Marner and Matthews and Kap and Johnnson and Gards, etc etc etc on the horizon. After reading the posts of so many intelligent non Leaf fans, I realize they are simply trying to help...like an intervention - they somehow know what I am feeling inside, as much as I refused to admit. My anxiety is well beyond a healthy level...to the point where I don't even care about the SC or even winning at this point. If this is what winning is like, then I don't wanna win anymore.
I think I only have one choice and that is to change my allegiance. After being a Leaf fan for more than most of you have been alive, I am now going to cheer for the Kings...at least until they get good again.

Honestly,

The main reason I want the Leafs to win a cup at some point, is just to tell the idiots on this site to (frank) off.

Every day there is so much stupid poop thrown our way it is unbelievable.

As soon as one troll theme is shot down, they dream up another and it becomes a (frank)ing feeding frenzy of idiocy.

- Aetherial

Yes. It's just one thing to another. Once proved wrong, it's just a newer more stupid thing.

My guess is they do Matthews first, because there are good comparables, and he's the best player on the team. Probably 11.5M is my guess.

Then Mitchy comes in somewhere between Willy and Matty, maybe 8.5 if we're lucky.

I just don't think these kids are super greedy; it's not a retirement deal well into their UFA deals or anything and I honestly think there's nowhere else they want to play: they have the power to become a perennial cup contender, by making sure that they stick together on contracts that make sense.

- gravyface

Matthews needs to hit a home run with this contract because he is made of glass and will be out of the league in two years.

Unless, of course, he signs the Coyotes' offer sheet.

But if we match, then yeah, out of the league. Two years. Book it.

Do these haters realize when they say Nylander is the 6th or 7th best Leaf players it's actually a massive compliment to the organization? He would be #1 on the Habs.

This guy was in here saying Marner deserves Echiel money but isn’t even close to as good as him....apperently Marner getting more points than Echiel is bad because it means he will get more money but it doesn’t mean he’s as good or better than him.

It’s (frank)ed what these people say to make themselves believe it.

I heard an interesting tidbit on the radio the other day:

Apparently (!) Ennis signed in Toronto for peanuts because they sold him on their top-notch sports medicine team.

Not sure how accurate it is with many saying he wouldn't get any NHL contract, though.

I called a 4 game losing streak for them...I was sceptical of the Panthers game but now that the sabres lost I think a back to back against the preds and the Leafs are two more losses to them.
