I just think, generally speaking, Phil is not the kind of asset you walk in UFA for nothing. I think you say "thank you for 6 great years" and you use him to bring back a few younger pieces/high draft pick to attempt to stay competitive as you get into the twilight years of Sid and Geno.

Of course, if we win a cup between now and then, my opinion could easily change.

- YouMeAndDupuis9

Phil is coming off a career year and on pace for about the same. He's cost-controlled and signed until he's about 34/35(not sure when his bday is). Do you re-evaluate your situation every year? Sure, but I think the assumption is you keep him as long as you can until the rebuild begins.

Really big trades don't happen too much anymore, but if I'm dealing with ANA I'm looking to do this...

TO PIT: Slifverberg, Montour and Miller
TO ANA: Rust, Maatta + Addison

Ideally a move like this would happen with a pre-negotiated extension with Silfverberg.

The Pens need to be VERY careful with any moves the make this year and lean more toward "hockey trades" and not rentals. Regardless of whatever moves they make, no matter how good, there's the reality that the Pens may still miss the playoff, so I don't think they should auction assets for temporary fixes.

While Addison is a very good prospect, getting a proven and improving young RD in Montour, it's worth it.

That's very intriguing. I think Miller is a great stop gap goaltending choice.

Only thing I'm hung up on.... I don't see Montour play enough so I'm curious why, as an offensive defenseman, his metrics are so poor?

Which metrics are you referring to?

EDIT: After looking at some different analytics, I think I'd rather have Manson

Watching the Caps/Ducks game and the Caps' commentators are ridiculous homers. They made a comment regarding Wilson saying no further action from the NHL, so there's nothing left to talk about with that.

Then? When talking about Oshie being out they say they still can't believe nothing was no against Morrisey. So eight games later there's still something to talk about, but one game departed from the Wilson incident and there's nothing left to talk about?

What a joke.

Looking at the standings today current trade partners would be

East: Car, Ott, FLA, maybe MON...DET doesn't make trades

West: ANA, STL, CHI, EDM, VAN, AZ, Maybe LV and MIN. Already traded with the Kings so that would be unlikely again.

Why in the world would a league trying to gain more veiwership stop a goalie fight from happening? No one is not happy about a goalie fight.

Not sure why WPG would want to do that. Lowry is young, cost-controlled and good.

Well, I think that move would make the Pens better defensively and upgrades some depth, but overall it hurts the offense.

Regardless, nobody is taking JJ.

- Rinosaur

I think it hurts the team as a whole. It’s not a net gain.

I wouldn't trade Kessel now either. I'd pair him with Malkin the rest of the season and reevaluate. I'd love to get Stone in the off-season. I don't think he'll sign before reaching UFA.

I'd put Brassard, Rust, Maatta, Sprong and picks on the market with the idea of bringing back a 3C and RD.

What sucks about the way they're handling their young players in the AHL is we have no idea if any of them can cut in the NHL because they only bring up the stiffs that we already know about.

What about Dzingel?

I like Dzingel and think he'd be a good fit, but I think teams will overpay for him. I'm not saying a 1st or anything, but probably more than the Pens can give up.

I'd hold on to the first until I'm confident we're making the playoffs.....or simply lottery protect it. What do you consider an over-pay? We're in pretty bad shape and it's hard to piss away one of these last few years of Sid and Geno. An over-pay might be necessary.

It's hard to speculate when you get into the prospect level. We have a few of them that look good but they're at least 2 or 3 years away from the NHL.

IMO if the Pens are going to trade for any kind of young-ish winger with top-nine ability, they should attempt to get someone who's under contract or be able to pre-negotiate an extension.

Rentals do the Pens no good being closer to the bottom than they are to a playoff spot.

Maybe more to it than just one for one but...

They wanted Brassard at the deadline last season and still havent filled the hole since Stastny left.

I just don't see them giving up a young quality cost-controlled player for a rental.

Anti Social Personality disorder! Wilson is a sick individual. The NHL is a total joke, perhaps they ll act when he really hurts someone bad or ends a career!

Lowry's age and career numbers are very similar to Sheahan's.

Career numbers might be similar, but Lowry is a better player in just about ever aspect of the game and brings other intangibles.

Regardless, Lowry is a good young player signed to an affordable contract. They're not moving him for an older UFA like Brassard.

This team is way to flawed to be a win now (as in this year) team. Jim Rutherford has botched this roster in a big way. We can blame this or that, but Rutherford has really made some bad off season decisions. His trades are not all bad, but his off season UFA signings have been brutal.

No worries. PIT will be fine after the major Howard + Nyquist trade.
