As a 40 something dude still trying to play in a rec league with 20 somethings, you couldn't pay me to miss a year of my prime and the stakes are extremely low in my world.

You can always make more money, but you'll never get this year back. Bye bye age 22 in the NHL.

This could really bite him in the ass if he decides to sit a year.

I know - after several welfare gifts from the richer NHL teams, tanking to acquire Mario and the fishiest draft of all-time to get Sid

It's like the matheson hit on Peterson. One group saying it's nothing, one saying has to protect leagues young stars, another saying it's illegal and unnecessary to body slam a guy regardless of who it is. Don't even remember if matheson got any games on that one.
- matt1337

The exact same thing that Matheson did to Pettersson has happened 3 times this season already. And only that one received a suspension.

The league has no consistency.

It's tough for a 22-year old to understand how glorious the now is.

What's ironically upsetting is that Michael Nylander, his father, is likely pushing this agenda along with his agent, a notorious sit-and-wait tactician, both old men who strike me as being selfish in the sense that they're not encouraging him to appreciate the now and sign a deal before the season started.

IF, Willie comes back, he needs to be awesome. Or he will be called out by the fans. JMO

It's hard to think about now at 22 years old when you're surrounded by financial advisors and the memories of friends who had to stop playing due to injury.

In many ways it's the proper way to think. I don't blame him for wanting to get the best deal possible, but it's hard to respect when the majority of the people who put him in that situation (the fans) will never get the same shake.

K, watched another angle, he may have just clipped him accidentally. Hard to say with him though. Still a (frank)er.

If you don’t think he did it on purpose and agree with some in here, you’re a moron.

Yep, for sure. Just putting himself in the spotlight. I hope AM doesn’t get hurt again and Willie has to be the C.

Someone like Marleau needs to sit the kids down and explain how hard it is to win a cup in the league and ask if they really want to potentially go their whole career without winning one just because they had to hit a home run on their second contract. They don't have to take a discount just reasonable. Matthews isn't as good as McDavid and bett r than Eichel 11-11.5. Nylander is around pasta larkin Ehlers 6.5 - 7. Marner probably lower than kucherov In the 8's.

Just realized that Gaudreau is only making 6.75 how is that now being shoved down Nylanders throat. He signrf that at 22 coming off a pt per game season.

Gotta think there will be a stigma around him his entire career too. I mean, his own father was tagged as being selfish, bouncing around the league, and that was before a cap was in place.

Despite the players wanting to make as much as possible, the financial limitations of even the mighty Bank of Maple Leafs are crystal clear.

The players will say that they text each other congratulations on contracts, but c'mon, these are competitive A-type personalities: you know they'll be sizing him up and his paycheques when he's on and off the ice.

The angles are weird: the one where you can see his face (from media box camera) and angle, he looks like he's puck-watching and barely clips him. The one from behind the net shooting up center ice, looks like he tries to tear his shoulder off.

(frank) do I know? He's still a douche.

The ability to make money from sponsors is far greater in Toronto than it is in Arizona, , for example. So, I really don't understand the fight over a little money. TBH, 6 million is a lot of money to play the game you love. I think how much money I was paid,,, nothing, free gear, wow..

He also sat and was poope that year too, which is probably why they don't want a bridge deal, because they know this year of the bridge will probably be poop.

Takes a while to get up to game speed: there's a reason the entire month of October is a gong show that rarely representative of how the league functions.

There are markets where the taxes are better too, can't discount that, but ask Darcy Tucker and Wendel Clark how they like being career Leafs: those guys make a bunch as Alumnis for meet and greets, tons of comps, trips, flights, etc.

Players make 50% of the revenue pot. What the players/agents will look at is what percentage of the cap should a player make. Comparables are ok - but you have to consider both really good contracts and the bad ones as well. I agree with your post, but Matthews is the most important one to get done. If he is not signed at July 1, I am confident that several teams would be willing to offer $16m x 7 and give up the 4 firsts gladly to get him. This would totally (frank) the Leafs as they would likely match and be forced to start throwing assets overboard. So if he wants the same as McDavid - give it to him all day. Hopefully Marleau does have that chat and it works - I have my fingers crossed.
