What are we gonna do when Matthews, Marner and Nylander are older and slowing down, but won't let the Leafs trade them as rentals to a playoff contender, then they leave the following year for nothing and sign for $43M each with the Guangzhou Shippers and win the Stanrey Cup?

Babs loves him. I don't think they do anything with him unless they absolutely have to for cap reasons.

Babs loved Leo and Polak.

Don't agree. It is a moveable contract after they pay that big bonus.

I heard the same about Clarkson and Phaneuf deals. Those were harder to move imo.

- RogerRoeper

I didn't say it was not a moveable contract. I stated my opinion that I don't think the Leafs - out of principle will move Marleau next year. And you are fully entitled to disagree.

No discipline for Wilson. Guy is such a piece of poop. It's like he's been practicing clipping guys below the neckline with that hit.

I don't think they will either...and I'm good with that. Marleau's a class act.

I agree. I think Marleau's sticking around the length of his contract. Puts us in a bit of a jam, but I don't see Gardiner coming back either; Dermott slots in nicely there, Rosen/Holl/Borgman slot in.

I honestly didn't think the play was much of anything. He never changed his path and kinda pulled his arm in to avoid it a little but I also didn't think the Matheson play was anything so I'm probably in the minority.

K, watched another angle, he may have just clipped him accidentally. Hard to say with him though. Still a (frank)er.

I really don't get what Nylander is holding out for - makes no sense. If another team wanted him at 7.5M per year they would have offer sheeted him or threatened to get a deal to happen.

1) doesn't seem like sufficient churn or rumor about any teams actually willing to pay him more than 7M
2) Leafs obviously don't value him (and they shouldn't) more than Patrnak
3) Leafs have Marleau's contract coming of the books after 2019/20 season
4) only way to fit Nylander in "reasonably" in the short term is a 2-3 bridge around 4-5million - which is similar to what Kucherov did in Tampa
5) he can't avoid being traded contractually - so his only wany to "prevent" the Leafs from dealing him is to be cheap enough until Marleau's CAP hit goes away

time for Will boy to chose between seemingly
i) unrealistic self-evaluation(you are not as good as Kucherov/Pastrnak),
ii) whatever your agent and/or father are telling you isn't realistic or correct
iii) make your own decision
iv) realize you aren't getting inflated dollars because simply put the Leafs are doing fine without you
v) you aren't getting Marner money

there really isn't any mystery at all.

We are not privy to actual negotiations - only speculation. Willy is keenly aware that he is likely to be traded - probably at the next draft. I expect a deal to happen today - this has hurt him much more than it hurt the Leafs. I don't blame him for trying to get a good contract - Leafs most definitely played hard ball - and they had to.

The worst part of this is that it won't end today. Nylander trade speculation will be endless...

I hope they just sign Matthews and Marner and we never hear anything about it.

As a 40 something dude still trying to play in a rec league with 20 somethings, you couldn't pay me to miss a year of my prime and the stakes are extremely low in my world.

You can always make more money, but you'll never get this year back. Bye bye age 22 in the NHL.

Unless he is fine playing the KHL, I don't see how this gets him anywhere.

His value to the Leafs, or any other team, does not increase if he is not in the NHL. His trade value does not increase if he sits.

So, why would the Leafs trade him at all if he sits this year.

Besides, unless he signs long term in the K, he is taking a huge chance by walking away from 10's of millions. People get injured in the K too.

- Aetherial

I agree, if he were interested in making a serious investment in himself - he would have asked for a 2-3 year bridge deal at training camp. Putting up great numbers on a stacked team - is certainly a better career move. Even if you take a couple of million less a year for 2 or 3 years, it is better than sitting on your ass or playing for the (frank)en KHL. I think he is really good, but unless there is a serious bump in the cap and soon - can't see him as a Leaf after this year.
