No I'm not, I've answered it 12 different ways. Zaitsev is the lesser of their current evils. He's paid relatively big bucks, he's got more experience than Ozhiganov, more youth than Hainsey, he's actually right handed. He's not the right guy or the best guy for the job but by default, given who they have, it's Zaitsev.

Or completely off the board, Rielly and Gardiner, Dermott and Zaitsev, Hainsey and Ozhiganov. Apparently, Rielly and Gardiner have some pretty good advanced stats when they play together but the sniff test on that pairing suggests they'd be in tough defensively.

Edit: I would probably go with your 2nd option.

When Marleau retires, that 6 AAV can be spent on a UFA to play with Matthews. Kapanen and Marleau can suffice for now. The teams needs comes before Matthews' desires, especially if that help on defense helps the team win more (important) games which probably would make him happier than a skilled linemate.

If absolutely necessary, put Marner with Matthews and give Tavares different linemates considering Tavares is locked in and isn't going anywhere anyway and because Tavares has proven he can make average players into 20-30 goal scorers.

I love the idea of a three line threat. Center depth is huge for me. Sign Nylander. Keep the potential stars we drafted. The burden of a dman that cost Nylander, in this market, is a huge burden. This is a city that Boo'd Larry Murphy. Trade our first, Lilligren or another dman, maybe add Jonsson and get a good dman. Keep Nylander with Matthews. win win.

Id rather trade uncertainty in picks and prospects to improve d than trade a proven like Nylander.

It is very scary to me as an example drew doughty and Eric karlson pay cheque’s they get and all the hype. EK play is not the greatest. Maybe time of adjustment playing in SJ. Doughty big contract at $11M I’ve seen both played play a lot this year and not impressed. Maybe divas can do as you say and get a good RHD man and hopefully a contract that can be manage for 3-5 years

Despite his offensive numbers, Rielly isn't the best defensively yet. That could change over time but a top pair of Rielly and Gardiner could be a turnover fest followed by a dump, crash and bang game from the opposition that I'm not sure that pairing could handle very well.

When you look at previous cup champs, they have more in common with solid center depth as opposed to solid dmen. Especially with solid wingers. I do concede both are important.

EK needs to be on top of his game to be effective. He's like winning the lottery: when he's on, he looks like a no-contest perennial Norris winner, racking up points you'd be happy with from your top 6. When he's not, you're wondering why he's even in your top pairing.

Gardiner and Zaitsev have become the shutdown pairing so far this year, freeing MOrrgan to do exciting things. But I think that's mostly Z breaking the cycle, which he does really well, with Gardiner lugging it out and making those stretch passes.

Rielly Gardiner would require Rielly to dial it back and trade up with Gardiner, but with center support to get the puck out.
