If it's true that Dave Scott was asking Homer questions, and Homer therefore was asking Hextall questions, I mean, hey.

Again: We all work for somebody. I said it years ago, before Ed Snider passed: Everybody has a plan and agrees on the plan until the day the wrong person decides they don't still agree with the plan

- AllInForFlyers

You're right and I think it's pretty obvious that Holmgren and company no longer agreed with the plan.

What I'm getting at is Snider told Holmgren to fix the goaltending but he didn't tell him how to. He left that up to Holmgren. We know what happened.

I think this is along the same lines. Upper management told Holmgren to fix this. Holmgren met with Hextall and we can assume how that went.

Hextall didn't lose focus and change course. Upper management did. We see what happens when upper management gets involved. In my view, if they weren't willing to see this all the way through, they never should've hired Hextall. No GM gets an unlimited time frame but I think they panicked due to how this season was going.

"No plan survives contact with the enemy. "

In this case the enemy is neither being horrible or being great for an extended period of time which puts pressure on the plan to rebuild just via the draft.

Goaltending is one thing that can he hung on Hextall. I think there are a lot of circumstances involving that but not getting NHL goaltending on a nightly basis is a major factor. How about the subpar play of the team's two best defenseman? Hang that on Hextall? JVR getting hurt? The team's lack of commitment on the ice in terms of intensity and urgency? Hang that on Hextall?
Last year and the season before Hextall brought in Fillpula. Many ripped the player and that they had to improve that and play the young guys. They gave a shot to a young player. He faltered. They now have a hole at 3C. I wanted Hextall to go after Riley Nash. Columbus signed him to a 3 year deal. He has 2 assists in 22 games. I'd make a great GM. Veteran player in MacDonald gets hurt and for whatever reason can't get his game back. Is that on Hextall? Top players aren't playing sound two way hockey. Is that on Hextall?

Pretty sure Hexy made an offer to Nash in the summer, as well as De Haan

There can never be enough. We'll need a certain someone to motor over to Vorhees and start going through the shredding bin with an eye for jigsaw puzzles and a case of scotch tape.

Could definitely see Buffalo or Vegas in on Simmonds. If they could somehow get Suzuki out of Vegas oh man.

Bill Meltzer: Analyzing the Hextall Firing

Moving forward, I think the next obvious decision is to fire the coach. What does firing a GM really do if you don’t make changes from the top and work your way down?

I believe the Flyers have along GAO between games next week.

They'll need to get Suzuki out of Montreal.

I watch a lot of Hockey Central at Noon, on the NHL Network, and that's what Doug MacLean also says a lot about the times he was fired: It was never that he didn't have a plan, and that the plan wasn't approved by his GM and owners.

It was the same at all of his stops: The problem always came when the owner "forgets" they agreed with the plan they all agreed upon, and then poop rolls downhill.

All of us in the corporate world know how that works

Not sure any ownership would agree to a rebuild that takes 6+ years to win a playoff round

If I had to be my house on something, it would be the sentence "Upper management told Holmgren to fix this."

I could absolutely be wrong, but I believe the stories that Homer was happy and energized being on the business side and wasn't hands-on on the operational side the last few years.

I am obviously projecting my experience in the corporate world and, again, could be totally wrong, but Hextall getting the gate is classic "corporate not liking the answer you gave when they came to you with a problem for you to help them solve."

Hextall was in a tough spot to be sure. He was charged with a rebuild while staying competitive at the same time. He was successful in the first but failed in the second for all of the reasons that have been discussed here. I don’t know that you can truly accomplish both simultaneously.

The Flyers have one chip to trade with an expiring deal. It's going to take more than that.
- MJL

I meant BRINGING IN expiring deals.

So you can avoid the cap-hell position we are in right now.

And then you have total freedom/blank slate beginning General Hextall coveted so much.

I SWEAR you will hear more and more stories about palace intrigue as we distance ourselves from this day.

I don't think there is any question that they sat Hextall down and told them they want him to escalate and speed up the rebuild and start making moves for now and that he balked at that. That's when Holmgren made the decision. They knew what they were getting when they hired Hextall.

There's that -- I know how I sound on here. Like a broken record

But I say it again: You never have as much time as you think you do to start winning. You just don't. Every single time you miss the playoffs, or don't win a round, you are eligible to get the hook at any point thereafter. Doesn't mean you will. But you simply do not have any currency to spend if you miss or don't win in the playoffs

I'd be curious to know if management gave him a mandate of remaining competitive through the rebuild. I've always felt Hexy chose to remain competitive because he believes bringing in young players to a bad team hurts their development

I’m not sure how involved he was in all that went down this morning, but I believe Bob Clarke played a role at some level. He was around the #Flyers facility quite a bit today and had been more visible in the past week. I’m also told he met with Dave Hakstol yesterday

THE OLD FLYERS ARE BACK BABY!! BREAKOUT THE FREE AGENT LISTS!! IT'S TIME TO GO HUNTING THIS OFFSEASON!! WOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
