Maybe Kane is the next one getting shipped out? Blockbuster!

That's factually incorrect. Sorry your boy Nicky has been sent packing, but nearly every comment on Eklund and Tanner's post has been saying Hawks win this trade or a wash at worst. I will cetainly miss Schmaltz's bailouts and overpassing when wide open in the slot

For a team that lacks depth, how can you be angry about a 2 for 1 trade? Addressed lack of size with Perlini who is a utility type player that can play on any of the top 3 lines. Strome is a question mark for sure, but he lit up the AHL in the Regular Season and Playoffs, has history of ELITE production with Debrincat, and has never played with anyone near Patrick Kane's level.

The potential to address 2C, Top 9 Power Winger (with Speed), while saving cap space the next 2 seasons (Strome on an ELC until 2020, and Perlini RFA next summer that SHOULD be cheaper than Schmaltz).

Hard for me not to love this trade ON PAPER. We will all get to see these boys in action hopefully tomorrow.

I like the trade myself. Just prodding a little is all...

I will say that I see his asking for a trade as more likely now than ever before. . .

Don't really see Stan asking him to waive yet

My problem is not with trading Schmaltz, which I can understand on a number of levels, even if I would prefer to bridge him and see how he does when he is 23 years old in more of a man's body.

I do have a problem with the return on trading him. The main logic seems to be Strome played with 4th line players in ARIZ, so let's play him with top 6 guys here in Chicago, and VOILA! he becomes a top 6 talent, when he has yet to score double digits in points in any one season despite playing in parts of 3 seasons. Granted, the games played totals are low, but what is there to get excited about him?

Or does his crappy career to date not count because he wasn't playing in Chicago and we weren't watching him play?

Yeah, he wasn't happy. I can't remember where I saw it, but all of the guys in the locker room liked being around Schmaltz and playing with him. A good teammate and a good presence. It does sting, at least Kane thinks so.

Listening to Colliton, he apparently was at least in on the decision to trade Schmaltz.

A lot of the same points about "you have to give to get", "Schmaltz is a good player...". He seemed to concentrate on Strome being a very smart, two-way player, good vision/IQ.

The new guys arrived half-way through practice, so that might have something to do with the initial slotting.

Frighteningly, Colliton had a lot of praise for Hayden, and is actively looking at him on the top line. It breaks up Toews and Kane for that ever elusive balance, but it better actually work.

JP!!! Did like him.

I'm calling it now, if Strome wears #17 he will be a nothing. Let's take a trip down memory lane with other Hawks that have worn #17:
Darryl maggs
Dave kryskow
Alain daigle
Peter marsh
Wayne Presley
j.p. Dupont
reto van arx
sheldon brookbank
Jimmy hayes

#17 on the Hawks is the equivalent of wearing a red shirt uniform in the original Star Trek. You just know it will not end well.

I think it would be great if they could actually set up Kane with some line mates that he can play with for a while. He was great when playing with Panarin and Anisimov. Heck, maybe just the current set-up with AA and ADB. Just something to get and keep familiarity.

Definitely, Kane thinks chemistry is a big part of the game as well as his game.

Those look like "let's lower expectations while we figure out what we just acquired" kind of lines.
One of the takes on Strome was that he played with 4th liners in AZ and now, he's playing on the 4th line. So there's that.
But if what Justin said on Twitter works out and he centers the second line with Perlini playing with Toews, you have something like:

Saad - Toews - Perlini
ADB - Strome - Kane
Fortin - Kampf - Kahun
Martinsen - AA - Kruger

It does seem like AA is available if any contender wants him. Kruger probably is available too.
I'd like another top six RW, but this trade does help the depth.

Disagree. Whether he was in a contract year or not, and whether he was demanding an amount management thought was too high or not, he had already worn out his welcome with his play and his attitude. Schmaltz brought the criticism on himself. The contract issue wasn’t the engine that drove this trade. Schmaltz traded himself.
- Z3Hawk

Bowman basically came out and said 3 times today that it wasn't really anything they weren't happy about with Schmaltz just that they wanted to add two players and have to give an asset to get two.

Sorry BB, but the sun still rises. We need our superstar to lead the youth movement. That isn't leading by example, well, not positively anyway.

I liked his goal off the Saad feed, but that is about it.

I agree with you, I'm just wondering if he is not giving it 100% because of the change and maybe some frustration. He was obviously not 100% on the road trip he was sick, just before Q was fired, and he has been really off and on since then, but I'm not sure he is 100% engaged at the moment. Hopefully Kane and the team can catch some more spark here.

Good catch, JP Dumont was another one that was young and a huge chickenpoop and got traded. Went on to a decent career

If Stan's telling the truth there, that sounds like a GM doing a rebuild. He's acknowledging he's got several holes to fill.

Seems like Kane thought Schmaltz should be his center. He also mentioned is was only on and off chemistry in spurts. I think he is more bummed on a personal level then an on ice level.

He was a mentor for Schmaltz sure they grew close. Kane has lost a lot of close teammates over the years (versteeg and sharp were close to him) sure he will be fine.

At the end of the day Kaner just wants someone to finish his saucer passes and someone who can feed him the puck for that big ole slapper he rocks these days.

The best part of this trade is no more Schmaltz in the slot on the PP lol! Please put Dcat there or Strome who actually has a good shot.

Ya know - he sounded like a pro who knows this is part of the game - sad to see someone he played a year or two with - but not devastated or anything....

I'm not saying there wasn't maturity or professionalism. It is a reality of the game, but he still liked Schmaltz. As a person and as a player.

I know this ain't his first ro-deo, cowboy.

His wiping at the corners of his eyes multiple times was the only subtle giveaway this was slightly different than the regular press scrum for him. Like I said before, he's a loyal and openly emotional guy. Has to be hard to train up multiple young guys (Hartman, Schmaltz, Vinnie, Panarin) to your liking for them only to leave a few months or a year or so later.

Don't think either of us were spinning any conspiracy theories beyond reading him as being (unsurprisingly) unhappy.
