Worst case scenario we got what we paid for him back at the deadline. IF the Leafs were to sign him in the offseason, they're going to be sending Marner or Mathews packing, which would be hysterical.

I am very confident he will resign right around New Years. He can be the man here, have an elite center to play with AND Buffalo is rising fast. We check the boxes. If he was a die hard leafer, methinks he'd have held out on a trade from Carolina instead of waiving his no movement clause to join their biggest in-division rival.

I don't think the Leafs consider the Sabres their biggest rival.

Plus it's only a year and he'd likely play with Eichel and that's a nice boost to your stats to get your money.

That's if he wanted to maximize.

He had a pretty awful year last year, even accounting for the team's year, and he had a very bad start to this year. I was getting a little concerned, but then "all of the sudden" he started playing quite well. I don't know if maybe he was still shaking off that shoulder injury/surgery from last year?

I don't think it's injuries, just mismanaged. Same with Bogo. neither of them is good defensively, but they have offensive upside, especially mccabe.

It took Kane a solid year to return to form after his shoulder surgery(let the arguments ensue about whether that's any good or not).

I've seen him get pushed off the puck in the corners sometimes too easily.
But hey, you may be right.
Perhaps it is a combination of the 2 things that need to be addressed for defensive zone purposes of course.

I'm no expert nor do I claim to be even though I have watched this game for over 50 years.

I do sit 12 rows up from the ice though which does help me in my evaluations.

That's only if you know what you're looking at.

But seriously, it's more about being centered over your skates than raw strength. If you've got a good base it's incredibly hard to knock you off your pins. It's all about leverage. It's how an offensive tackle almost standing still can rag doll a defensive player running at full speed. The low man wins pretty much regardless of strength.

The patience there was terrific from tage.
