I don’t understand the hate for this trade! I was a Schmaltz guy but we got two prospects back. Schmaltz is still a prospect who has done nothing away from Kane. Perlini is 22 I don’t he is a finished product. Assume he has some skill he was 12th overall in wait 2014 same year as Schmaltz.

Strome is the wild card. If he can improve his skating this trade is one of the best the Hawks have ever made. It is also AZ that organization is trash. If Strome has the desire to be a really good NHL player the Hawks have the trainers and staff in place. Look at DCat. One off season with the hawks staff and he’s is noticeably stronger on the puck and has more jump and explosiveness to his game.

Clearly Schmaltz lacks the desire so far to be a really good player. If he dedicated an off-season or two to stay and work with the Hawks staff no reason he hasn’t gotten stronger.

In his 2nd full season he still looks very winded at the end of shifts. That’s a lack of conditioning and strength training in the offseason.

I LOVE this trade. TWO First Rounders one at THREE one at TWELVE - both much higher than Schmaltz at 20. Schmaltz and his complete lack of desire and heart gone. A player who didn’t want to train, to check, to shoot...

It is also addition by subtraction. It will be just such a pleasure to NOT watch Schmaltz and his annoying play anymore. True Grit must be so sad.

Well played, just checked and you are correct.

Guess I was thinking of the Hawks over the last few years under Bowman/Quenneville where they have been mostly a 23 man roster.

The Hawks have the cap space this year, so I wouldn't suspect they stick with 22 for an extended period of time.

- Justin Lowe

Well I guess you weren’t kidding, sure got your 23 man roster back fast!

McD can deny it all he wants but this team is rebuilding as we speak. Strome and Perlini give them some size and youth up front. Next up to move are guys like AA, Kruger and some of those extra Dmen.

Strome was drafted to score and distribute to wingers that can score - doesn't it make sense to put him between Kane and Debrincat or Saad ?

- RickJ

Would be thrilled to see anisimov, rutta, manning, and kunitz all moved. If Anisimov is moved, slowly the hawks are now starting to create a healthy chunk of cap space for this summer.

Is it me or is it a bit worrisome that StanBo only trades with like 3 teams? This is a red flag in my opinion--is it possible people do not want to deal with him?
- KMFDMLight

Maybe those are the only teams willing to trade with bowman

Question to the panel who might know more than I. Is strome a better equal or worst skater than AA?

Saad Toews Perlini
Dcat Strome Kane
Kahun Anisimov XXX
Kampf Kruger Hayden/Martinsen

Figure Johnson goes down. Kunitz and Fortin? Unless Hayden stays on line 1 for a while then Perlini on line 3. Not a bad top 9 if things gel Kahun Anisimov Perlini is a nice 3rd line.

We’ve seen Kane dominate with old slow Brad Richards and Versteeg. Strome and Dcat is a big upgrade from that. Strome just needs to play solid hockey and win draws.

Hawks taking a gamble. Time will tell if it pays off, but for now we traded a player from our top 6 for two guys who were 3rd/4th liner minutes for the Yotes. Two bodies coming in pushes someone else out of the lineup. Don't think this will be any immediate help to the team, but they gained some size. I half wonder if this is related to contract talks with Schmaltz more than anything else.

I do think it did. Question is how much? ........ We all know Hawks love speed/skill and that's Schmaltz. Is it they realized he'd never be a center? Combination of things? ...... Is this more a dump of Schmaltz or that they coveted Strome and Perlini? ..... Any chance the Hawks insisted Perlini had to be in the deal? ...... No doubting this saves cap money for next yr. Combine that with the cap money Stan has banked is he angling for something big?

Yes! Saad’s speed with Cat-Strome I think would be a good second line.

Kahun or Hayden first chance with Toews-Kane?

Edit: Is perlini also immediately given a Top 6 look??

I am thankful that both players acquired have size. A center who can win draws, plus a potential power forward could be huge additions moving forward.

They have to put Strome with Dcat, no? Have to to start, no?............ Man if Perlini can skate top 6 and Saad continues playing as he has that is 2 true power forwards with speed in the top 6.

I havent looked to see who will be available (would love to see Panarin, although unlikely), but I am very thankful that I will no longer worry about seeing 6x6 next to Nick Schmaltz name.

Was just about to post this. Strome said Dcat is his best friend to this day. Exact words......... We know we're gonna see a happy Strome to start. That's good.

The way things are going probably not unlikely we'll see shuffling and both new guys giving some chances to fit into the top 6. We have 4 legitimate top 6 forwards at the moment and 2 spots for guys to audition/earn a spot.

I wonder if the Hawks are done dealing.

This trade makes me thing the rebuild might be truly in motion now. I don't think this was a turn the season around type of move.

We used this last offseason’s cap space on Ward (decent), Kunitz (bad), and Manning (awful).

I’m cautiously optimistic about the deal the more I read, but I still hope we have a new GM by draft day.

Yes...... Man the Hawks have been soooooooooooooooo stale for soooooooooo long then they can Q, bring in JC and now this trade. ....... Fun right now, as you say at least on paper.

What I like from the Strome scouting report is both scouts say his work ethic and compete are high. I'll take a 3rd overall hard worker lump of clay and see what we can make.

In theory, it’s a 2 for 1 trade on young top 6 projected forwards. The highly touted/drafted true Center in Strome with Kane/Cat is very exciting

A few hours ago, I was looking at that cap space next year and noticing the Hawks have some flexibility. Cam Ward, Kunitz, Kruger, Rutta all a combined 8 million. Of course you have to fill those spots, but they should be able to replace a few guys on the cheap and maybe upgrade some. There are some guys going UFA who are interesting...but who knows.

There are 2 r words that should never be used, and that is 1 of them. Remodel, hahaha. I think another in season trade will be made, but I have no clue when, maybe when Murphy and/or Davidson are in the picture again. I never saw this one coming! As far as turning the season around ... we aren't too far out, but the d needs to greatly improve/play consistently. I expect good things ... or Stan will personally hear from me, haha.

I wonder what Schmaltz was asking for $$ wise.

I bet it was starting at 6mil...and if so, great move to trade him. Hes not going to be a center and not putting up high enough points consistently to get that contract either.

Hopefully this Strome is better than his deadbeat brother. If he can be a 20/20 guy while keeping his faceoff numbers high this is a huge win.

I wonder how much money the Hawks will have this coming off season. I think theres a certain Matthews that may be coming up

Kunitz and Ward are 1 yr guys and will be off the books. I really thank Stan for that when his job was on the line............. I still think Stan knew his roster sucked, didn't know if Crow would play this yr and said no fuc&#@^ way am I wasting money on this yr... Approached the offseason like he had job security.

Yes and the continuing decline in Anisimov’s effectiveness made a top 6 center a huge hole. Perhaps Perlini-Toews-Saad for the
power cycle line

Well what I am most happy about currently is that the reckless speeding days seem to be going away. I was legit worried schmaltz was gonna get 6x6 from the Hawks. I hated this summer's moves, but if those were the only moves that could be made, they were and are way better than paying one player a long term deal for a lot of money. Manning sucks, but wont be around long. Itll be interesting to see what happens w Ward. Kunitz wont be here more than a year. If anisimov could be moved, then the Hawks are setting up nicely to maybe get a few quality players.
