the long awaited Nick Schmaltz blog! I bet it was good. Maybe you could sell it to James Tanner?
- matt_ahrens

I'm sure Tanner blog will have the general tone. AZ fleeces Hawks again!!!

Strome has another year after this, and Perlini is RFA after this season. Schmaltz is RFA after this season, and the question before the deal was what should his next contract look like? There was certainly an argument for trading Schmaltz, and now the question is did the Hawks get enough. Both players coming back are former first rounders, fwiw.

Can you just imagine how a hard nosed ex player like Coach Rick Tocchet will react when he gets a close up look at Schmaltz's on ice act.
- RickJ

I just posted on Eks site regarding something similar Rick. I think Stanley may have won 1here. Rick Tocchett is gonna pull the 2strands of hair left in his head out the first time he sees Schmaltz bail while going for a puck.

My initial reaction to this trade is very positive!

I'm glad the Blackhawks made a move. I'm glad Stan was willing to trade one of his draft picks that made it to the NHL level. I'm glad they traded him rather than paying him. I'm glad they got two players for him, one of whom has another year of his ELC after this season. Got some size.

Schmaltz may go on to be a very solid NHL player but this season it looks like he's playing not to get hurt, maybe wanting to sign that longer term contract or something like that. I don't really blame him but that's not the kind of guy you want to reward with a long term commitment. I like the move.

Not sure, Tanner is a big fan of Strome, and claims he's been misused by the coach and could be part of one of the greatest lines in NHL history, with Galchenyuk & someone else.

If strom can fine his game with dcat this could solidify the top 6. Now get some bottom 6 scoring help like a shaw type player and with murphy coming back hawks might be able make a run for a playoff spot.

Saad toews kane
Perlin strom dcat
Kauhn AA hayden
Martinsin kruger kampf
Kunitz extra send fortin to rockford kid is raw lots of upside though
Joki keith
Murphy Seabrook
Gus manning/rutta
Crawford
Ward
Still need another veteran d man in the bottom pairing. And bottom 6 scoring winger

Saad - Strome - DeBrincat

Really like this. 2 young guys with size, both lefty shots though. Only ADB from the right side. Time to move Keith and AA for Nylander , righty... (Dream).
More to come ???

Taking a step back, Colliton must have really not liked what he saw from Schmaltz. Can't imagine schmaltz gets moved this soon after a coaching change without his input especially with schmaltzs production last year, his age, and RFA status

It's amazing to ponder that Q might have been fired because he benched No Heart Nick and now the Tin Man has been jettisoned.

another present/future 2nd line center waves bye bye...ole stanbow playing the 2 for one odds maybe one of these former coyotes turns into a player...and he gets another year of contract certainty; better than severely over paying for a smaltz...

kinda wonder about this deal from the coyote perspective...

You make a good point, one I hadn't thought of. This along with Stan not wasting money on hacks over the summer when his job must be on the line makes me give him some respect........... Great point and agree with your whole post.

Two guys with size for a speed/soft type? Is Stan rethinking his approach?

Here is a little bit of insight, which is really quite basic at any level of hockey.

Forwards cover for d when they rush. It is a part of hockey.

More importantly, you had a 1 on 3. If you are in the NHL and can not cover a 1 on three and look over your shoulder to look for a trailer before attacking the 1, then there lies the problem. Actually that is a problem for bantam, high school, junior, college and anywhere.

I get it, you believe Gus is the source of everything bad in the world.

- TrueGrit

Are you kidding? Your points are not “insight.” There is not a Defensive System that works effectively with both D-Men taking themselves completely out of the play. Both - at the same time. You can’t look for forwards to cover dumb decisions. Gus didn’t smartly rush - didn’t join the rush. He tried to deke out the entire Panthers team on his own until he predictably and foolishly lost the puck deep in the Panthers’ end. He then loafed back. Presumably Yoki knows Gus is caught up ice and out of the play, or should know. Yoki then cannot take risks and he does. D-Men can’t just make mindless decisions - they have responsibilities.
