imo..The Leafs want Nylander in the lineup, they are pushing for a cup this season. So that is some leverage for sure.
- senstroll

It is surprising that there hasn’t been definite numbers leaked for either side. I think in someways that’s a good thing....

Every year he sits out adds a year to his rfa.?
- bobbyisno1

Only the first year.

Simple rule:

You get to be a UFA when you have 7 years in the league or hit the age of 27.

If Willie plays this year, he's on schedule to gain UFA status (provided, of course, he isn't locked up with a contract) at the age of 26, because he'll have 7 years of NHL.

If he sits this year and plays next year, he's on schedule to hit 7 years/27 at the same time.

And Nylander wants to get paid to play hockey in the NHL. The Leafs leverage far outweighs the Nylander camp.

This is not the only year they're going to want to try to win a cup. Make a sound business decision and things will fall in line.

Have you heard of that Kapanen guy?

He's helping alleviate the pain.

also the Leafs winning takes some pressure off.

There is no doubt the Leafs are a better team with him in the Lineup.

I think its a specific age or number of years since ELC

Can't be, team still has to have some rights.
Kovalchuck came back and Jersey still owned his rights.

But he also signed a contract, Nylander is not bound to a contract at the moment.

you said no leverage, thats all I am commenting on. Not the exact percentages you think each side has.

On an unrelated topic, does anyone give two poops about this Tiger vs. Phil thingy that is going down on Friday?

Apparently it's $19.99

If it was free and I was in front of a TV, I suppose I would watch it, but I can't say I would go out of my way to see it - and I sure as hell wouldn't pay a dime for the privilege.

- Atomic Wedgie

Understood but I still feel there's zero leverage. It's a "wants" vs. "needs" situation. The Leafs would like to have Nylander in the lineup but they're 1st in the East while missing their best player as it is.

Nylander needs to play in the NHL and the Leafs control that entire scenario.

Seriously. Every game I watch I sit there and think; "well Marner and Tavares just went out there and shredded that line... could you imagine if that team now had to figure out what to do because Matthews and Nylander just jumped over the boards"

I think a wee bit of your Leaf fanboyism is clouding your perception of Willy.
This is a contract negotiation
This is Willy's agent (and maybe an over controlling Dad?) using what little leverage they have to get the best deal for a 21 year olds future.

It's easy for us to sit back and say take less for the team! Or Willy is a sourpuss, what's the difference between 6 and 7 million?
The difference is 1 million bucks.
That about 20 years salary for untalented hacks like us.

If you were one of the top employees at your work place, one of the best 200 in the world at your job, would you take less so your buddies (hired after you) could make more?

I doubt it.

Dont let you fanboyism cloud your reporting.

That's poopty journalism.

This situation was inevitable and will sort itself out.

- ÄngryMëtälHämstërër

Nylander has zero leverage.

I think GMs have started to stumble negotiating with these 20 year olds and this is the backlash of it.

I should have said "watching games since both Matthews and Nylander have been out of the lineup"

Kypreos suggested David savard and Josh Anderson for nylander kind of says all you need to know about kipper.

Apple orchard seems too weird of a nickname. Just call him magic.

- mykokes

Kypreos thinks Nylander's value is ziltch. He is wrong.

I have a teamate who keeps jumping over the boards in a way that if you're standing next to him, you fear for your life every time.

Because his skates pass right by your (frank)ing face.

Very intimidating.
