The problem is that it's not Nylander's fault he is the 4th to 6th best player on this team. He is playing the business side of this. On another team he is maybe in the top one or two players and gets paid the 8+ mil if that's what he's asking and thus his slice of the pie is bigger elsewhere. If the Leafs are unable to pay him his slice of the pie, then trade him for pieces that will help now in their limited window of success. We see from teams like Chicago and LA that the window does not stay open for very long. Letting him sit is not an option. In any other profession besides professional sports I don't know many people who would take a pay cut to stay with a company to do the same job. - Radiox
This is 100% correct! He may be the star on a dozen other teams and be worth more to them but the reality is he is at most the 4th best on this team so he needs to paid accordingly. |

If you don't look ahead 8 mths they have the cap space, that would be a very bad thing to do IMO. That would get Dubas fired. - Garnie
Yeah but that's the Leafs problem, not Nylander's, right?
If he signs a bridge deal it could become Nylander's problem. That's why he's holding out for this. |

Would Nylander hold more value if he was signed?
Hypothetically if a team trades for Nylander aren't they essentially saying we will pay what he wants...so they could have signed him, used him while he was shopped. Otherwise teams across the league don't want to pay him that either.
If Nylander ends up missing the whole year his value could be cut in half. |

It's also part of his problem. If he doesn't sign, he won't get paid (other than some rubles). That will be a bit of an issue for him. |

If Nylander misses the whole year, he'll have no value and have to accept whatever the Leafs offer. Could be minimum wage at that point. |

Sure, but then it starts to become an issue for the leafs too, right?
If he's not playing, how much does his trade value lessen? That part is at least bad for everybody. |

I am sure Planet Leafs have look at all possible scenarios, but would there be a chance he could play overseas for a couple years to get out of his rights from the Leafs? |

He has no leverage. Seriously, what is he gonna do Bingo?

But if you were the 4th best employee at your company who was offering you a certain salary, and another company is offering you more because you would be their "go-to-guy", what would you do? And If you sat home from your company, and asked for more money they would replace you asap.
Again, I think it is best for TML to trade for assets they need now to win the Cup. Anything but a Cup in the next 2-3 yrs will be a big disappointment. |

Yeah i spose. Playing overseas for 5 full years is quite extreme though. A quicker way out for him is signing a bridge deal to arbitration rights time |

So basically he would have to wait until he was 27 and reach UFA status to come back...
Yeah, I don't know what papa Nylander is thinking. |

He is going to sign a 7 year 7MM per deal and his cap hit will be 6.5MM/year in years 2-7. It was the plan the whole time and the leafs are just playing with all of our hearts one last time before they start going on a multi-year run.
Obviously

Quickest way out is to not sign any contract with Leafs, make a trade request and leave it to Leafs when they want to trade you to a team you're ok with (at a long term deal of around 6-6.5million over 6-7 years).
Leafs can do it now (before 1st of Dec) so Nylander can play this season.
Leafs can do it before trade deadinle - so players coming back can still play for Leafs this season.
Or Leafs can make the trade in the off-season. |

If the Leafs trade Nylander and he gets to play this year, part of the trade terms should be that Dubas and select Leafs fans from hockeybuzz be allowed to shoot his dog. |

Honestly I don't really care about how much money Nylander's camp is asking for or how much the Leafs are willing to pay for him right now.
This team is killing it without him in the lineup this year. That in and of itself decreases his value to the team and makes him more expendable IMO.
I really don't want to see him traded, I just got his Young Guns card to add to my collection a couple of weeks ago. I hope he stays.
That being said, I think if he doesn't give and the Leafs can't find the right trade for him I have no problem with seeing him sit out the season. |

Not a clue.
My best guess is that three days beforehand he's traded for a package that isn't exactly what you'd like, but gives the Leafs some cost certainty. |

Honestly, it would kind of suck for the Leafs if they signed him 11th hour, especially if the team is still winning. The media would become a circus and to me that would be a huge distraction for the team. I'm sure some players will take him back and say its just business, but there will definitely be some who won't like it.
Do you think once Nylander situation is taken care of or at least on the back burner that Matthews or Marner is extended? |
