And Nylander, as a driving force of that profit over the last couple of years wants a piece of the pie.
Standing up for oneself is seen as a virtue until it's not convenient. - TheMussel
Meh, the leafs print money, i guarantee melanders impact on their bottomline or profit is minute.
The leafs winning the cup worth generate untold millions...with or without melander |

I never said they were cheap (when it comes to hockey, they're scum when it comes to telecommunications)
They are, however, concerned with profit - TheMussel
And they make loads of profit, and dont care about a million here or there.
Hence robidas island, horton etc. |

From a empathetic standpoint, if I was a significant contributing employee for an international conglomerate that printed money and they couldn't pony up another couple of thou so I could be adequately recognized for my contributions, I'd be sour too.

Why can't Nylander hold out for more money? It's his right to do so and he doesn't have to agree to anything to make you feel better. He has said nothing bad about the team in the media. This is just a standard salary negotiation that all businesses go through. It was dubas who made the mistake of guaranteeing that he can get all 3 of then signed.
If teams are being asked for offers and leafs are getting some then it's obvious that some teams are willing to pay him closer to what his asking price is. This means that he is probably correct to hold out since he can get more money elsewhere but instead of requesting a trade he is just trying to get the leafs to offer what other teams are willing to offer him. |

The fact that he wants 8 mil instead of 6.5 or 7, tells me he wants money on any of the 30 nhl teams, not a stanley cup with the leafs.
That alone is enough to alienate me.
On the flip side, maybe this was all calculated to have him sign in december and skew the cap hit.
Even if he does come back, its not a jersey i’ll ever want to purchase. |

He wasn't in the same situation.
The difference was that Tampa didn't have any cap space and couldn't pay him more at that time without trading somebody.
The Leafs DO have the space right now. He's gotta get what he can get before there's nothing left for him. |

I think a wee bit of your Leaf fanboyism is clouding your perception of Willy.
This is a contract negotiation
This is Willy's agent (and maybe an over controlling Dad?) using what little leverage they have to get the best deal for a 21 year olds future.
It's easy for us to sit back and say take less for the team! Or Willy is a sourpuss, what's the difference between 6 and 7 million?
The difference is 1 million bucks.
That about 20 years salary for untalented hacks like us.
If you were one of the top employees at your work place, one of the best 200 in the world at your job, would you take less so your buddies (hired after you) could make more?
I doubt it.
Dont let you fanboyism cloud your reporting.
That's poopty journalism.
This situation was inevitable and will sort itself out.

You dont know if they have already done that.
They could akready be adequately recognizing his contributions....which seems to be the case from all reports.
The leafs have been fine without him, so maybe his "contributions" arent as big as he or dad seems to think. |

True.
But he dropped his agent right after signing his long term deal....maybe he had regret?
Dunno. - Fakepartofme
Wasn't the same deal. Tampa didn't have any more space at that time to sign him because they had paid other guys first, so they gave him about as much as could fit under the cap on a bridge deal, and then gave him the big bucks later.
Difference is that Toronto hasn't paid the other guys yet, which is Kuch's point. Nylander needs to make sure he gets paid now when he has the opportunity to, rather than take a bridge deal and watch the other guys eat up the cap space so he's in a situation in two years where the Leafs flat out CAN'T sign him to the big contract without trading somebody. |

If there was no salary cap I would wholeheartedly agree with the comparison. But if there was no salary cap, I doubt the Leafs would be at all hesitant in giving Willy $8 mln a year...
