Speaking of covering all the bases, lets hope GM JR doesnt get trigger happy and trade away the #1 pick. It's looking more and more like a top 5 or higher.
Ive said it before, but always get drowned out, the biggest loss recently was Jason Botterill. The college pipeline dried up and you see the garbage they have replaced it with.
When does Sully start to take some heat? It's not always fair to blame the coach, but life isnt fair and coaches are hired to get fired. Joel Q is out there (for now). Again, Im not sure this is all Sully's fault, but it is easier to change a coaching staff rather than swap out 20 players. Of course, if you have 2 lawn chairs and some chicken wire in net, Scotty Bownman of the 70's cant help you so discussing the coach may just be an effort in futility. - Amanion
There's abundence of posters here plus this blog's writer that have been thinking/saying the same thing(s) about Botterill since he left. |

Sully gets the benefit of doubt, given the B2B runs. A big however, is that this is a performance/ results driven, short-term memory business, and he'll most likely be on a short leash for the foreseeable future. The writing is on the wall. Think he gets a few games with a full roster. It wouldn't be the first time goaltending cost a coach his job. Jarry call-up, if it happens, will be the siren of a desperate coach. |

Rutherford reeled back trade talk with the PPG. He says its up to the players we have to turn it around and blah blah blah.
I interpret that as... "I do not want to appear so desperate to make a trade"
He also said trades are very difficult this time of year.
I interpret that as ... "Sprong and Maatta aren't worth what I expected" |
|
|
|
For the record, I think JR needs to make a few more moves but I still believe we will make the playoffs. With a few decent moves, easily cup contenders again.
Many posters on here last year said the same stuff... "pens need to re-build/re-tool, trade for futures, get more draft picks, blah blah blah". I think that's dumb... its win now mode until Sid and Geno have severely declined.
Shake up trades are perfectly okay (Maatta, Rust, Sprong, even Horny or Brassard). Kessel (scoring wiz and enforcer) is off the table too. |

I don’t know how we could have beaten Galchenyuk. We would have had to give up Guentzel, who is a better player. |

THIS
I've never liked Maatta aside from his rookie year
We're a few seasons removed from the optimal time to trade him

Ehhhhhh..... you can only keep emptying the cupboard for so long. Eventually you're either going to have to recoup some pieces with a Crosby/Malkin trade, or just hang on to them once they're well past their prime and accept losing performances for a few years again. |

This is what has always bothered me about Rutherford. When you're "negotiating" it's best to say as little as possible. Take a page out of Shero's book.....that guy never let's on to what he's thinking.
If Anaheim was truly looking at Maatta last night, I think they'll be looking elsewhere after that game. |

I think the vast majority of us are good with option two. We’ve had an absurd amount of success in this era of Penguins hockey. The best thing to do IMO is to dump everything into maximizing these last few years to see if we can squeeze out one more Cup and then let Sid and Geno take a victory lap for a couple of seasons and retire Pens. Never seeing those two in another team’s sweater is more important to me than avoiding a rebuild. |

I agree we will turn this around..but GMJR needs to do something to correct this D corps, Dumo and Tanger are the only SEMI-consistent D guys we have currently. The rest..well they are liabilities to say the least - Braximous
Not sure they will turn this around. And the reason is the defense. Everyone can see Jack Johnson is a third pairing d-man. Unfortunately on this team that makes him the third best d-man. |

To me, this is a comment more suited coming from the coach and not the GM. JR's laying out the scapegoating. It's either his job or Sully's if the current roster is unable to play through and turn around their spiral. Start peeking over your shoulder Sully, the old man has knife in hand.
Pearson for Hagelin, so not too difficult there JR (baffoon). |

Domi had an 8.7% shooting percentage over 3 years in AZ and is now suddenly a 21.7% shooter? I think not.
Couple that with a 104.5 PDO and you have a guy who is likely to see some statistical regression in the near future. |

Edit and FYI Tatar has a shooting percentage just above his career average in DET. Change it to his number there and he drops 1 goal. His on ice sh% is in line with his career numbers too.

Tatar is a 20-25 goal, 40-50 point guy though and that’s still pretty damn solid. |
