I think the basic argument was that if someone has a similar amount of points, goals are valued more. Not that you should only count goals and just ignore point totals entirely.

Two players with 60 points, the one with 30 goals is more valuable than the one with 20 goals.

But if one has 30 goals and 55 points and the other has 20 goals but 70 points, it is a different situation.

JVR is 15-20 points behind Backstom every season. Horrible argument there.

Look at the history. Kane, Atkinson, JVR all guys who barely get 60 points but get paid 7 million. Why? Because they score goals.

Horrible argument? But goals are always better? And lets look at those 3 2nd and 3rd season, even though they pretty much all got a full season in their first year compared to Nylanders 22 games.

Evander Kane - 19 goals and 30 goals, 49 goals.
JVR - 21 goals and 11 goals in 43 games (pace for 21 in 82), 42 goals
Atkinson (who isn't making 7M like you say, hes making under 6m) - 21 and 22 goals, 43 total

Nylander - 20 and 22 goals, 42 total.

Nylander isn't far behind any of those guys early on. Comparing 26+ UFA players to a 22 year old RFA isn't fair either.
