I'm not so sure if Nylander is being "greedy" - it's more him not wanting to sign a sucker deal while Marner and Matthews walk away with a major bounty.
Having said that, a short bridge deal signed at the beginning of the season would have been his best bet. Prove he can put up the numbers and then sign a monster. Unfortunately for him, Dubas is playing hardball -- I really think Nylander's camp understimated Dubas' fortitude. He's in a tough position himself as a rookie GM: he has to play tough as it's going to set the bar for deals going forward on multiple fronts. - mjones242
a 6 million dollar sucker deal, Sign me up... FFS, he is not worth more. |

In what world is he waiving it?
If he wants a cup before he retires, who is he going to go to that gives him a better chance? - BINGO!
This is like when I heard Phaneuf and Clarkson's deal were never going to be moved.
If the Leafs tell him they want to move on he does not stay. |

I'm also guessing that after making a difficult decision to leave the only professional hockey team he's ever played for to join a budding and promising team, he probably doesn't want to get shipped around the NHL's basement like a village bicycle |

He was offered a 2 year/4.5 million deal by San Jose. It wasn't that hard at all. |

I think that's why he went there in the first place.
Sabres wing depth is so poopty that he was going to be the go-to guy on LW in all situations. Boost his value in a contract year. - BINGO!

the fact is; he doesn't care about playing for a contender.
there's just no way he would like to join the Triple Gold Club, or even join Forsberg, Fetisov and Larionov in the Double Triple Gold Club |

Notice how only with this subject matter because it hurts the Leafs will non-Leaf fans call the Leafs a contender |

Why not, they have money coming off the books in the next couple years. Horton/Marleau/Gardiner and the cap will continue to rise. The Leafs will be fine.
With that being said, i dont think Dubas realized how high Nylanders greed level would be - Archaic
Too bad that the Leafs couldn't get progressive and trade a player like Andreas Johnsson for a 3rd or 4th rounder, but as part of the deal, the remaining years of dead money that the Leafs are paying on Phil Kessel's contract. It's around $2 million AAV, for about another 4 years. That $2 million per, could go a long way to getting the big 3 RFA's and Gardiner signed.

you have to be a fan favorite first to become most hated Leaf of all-time.
if Nylander gets traded, the return will be good to very good.
so people will forget Nylander easily, in particular if he's traded to a team in the West.

Gardiner should not be signed. Dermott is looking really good and is a younger, better, cheaper DMan. And I am no Gardiner hater.

The only theory that gives some hope is this ....PM wanted to play 2 more years and was getting a few offers. Leafs offered him a contract that will let him play those two years and make 17.5 for two years of work. He agrees to waive the NMC in year 3 and gets traded to a cozy western golf community and gets a Zetterburg/Hossa/Datsyuk-like skin disorder that final year allowing him to retire.
Starting in September of 2019 PM will be making tiny dollars on his bi-weekly paycheque so maybe ...maybe ...there was no intent on him playing that final year.
Maybe ... |

probably. if he misses a season he'll also be seen as a yashin/peca type and won't get much respect from fans/media in the future too. |
