sure.
but marner at 9mln.
nylander at 7.5mln.
matthews at 11mln.
27.5mln - that's not a reason to say "we can and we will fit all three under salary cap". - plantheparade
Why not, they have money coming off the books in the next couple years. Horton/Marleau/Gardiner and the cap will continue to rise. The Leafs will be fine.
With that being said, i dont think Dubas realized how high Nylanders greed level would be |

I’m late to the party but I think he meant it as they could never find a winger for sundin.

this season (nylander) and next season (marner & matthews) need new contracts - that's before Marleau's contract come off of the books. |

You are likely right, I missed that inference. In that case I would whole hardheartedly agree. |

Marner (his agent) has had contract talks with Leafs before start of this season.
Marner's agent commented that if no new deal was done before the start of the season, they would wait until off-season.
Nobody here knows what Marner was looking for, nor what Dubas has offered.
However, at least in here in discussions, people were assuming before start of this season that Marner would be signed at around 8-8.5mln / year (and that's probably already the higher side on estimations).
Please come forward those that before start of this season thought that it would require a 9-10million/year long term contract for Marner to re-sign with Leafs. - plantheparade
Dubas was foolish to wait so long with nylander. I agree before the start of the season, i thought willie at 6-6.5 and marner 7 - 8.
Now, it makes no sense for him to sign for anything under 9 if matthews gets 12. |

I think that's why he went there in the first place.
Sabres wing depth is so poopty that he was going to be the go-to guy on LW in all situations. Boost his value in a contract year. |

Why do you assume in the Spring NYlander would have taken 6-6.5 million. Nothing I see tells me that.
The guy wanted 8 million since the beginning. |

Interesting... I don't know. Werenski is an RFA after this season, and might ask for similar salaries to Nylander. Unless he's more amenable to a bridge deal, I don't see it working from a cap perspective.
He also does nothing to address our RHD.
Maybe the only major advantage of getting him that I can see is he fills in for Gardiner if we get rid of him at TDL. - TheMussel
Exactly my thoughts. Gardiner likely doesn't re-sign and Werenski is younger, more defensively responsible, and hasn't reached his ceiling. An RHD that matches Nylander's talent level simply may not be available via trade (Parayko, maybe?).
Per the cap, I think it would be much more palatable spending Nylander type dollars (7-8M) for a D than a forward -- especially when Marner and Matthews are going to devour 20-22M between them. |

I'm not so sure if Nylander is being "greedy" - it's more him not wanting to sign a sucker deal while Marner and Matthews walk away with a major bounty.
Having said that, a short bridge deal signed at the beginning of the season would have been his best bet. Prove he can put up the numbers and then sign a monster. Unfortunately for him, Dubas is playing hardball -- I really think Nylander's camp understimated Dubas' fortitude. He's in a tough position himself as a rookie GM: he has to play tough as it's going to set the bar for deals going forward on multiple fronts. |
