Your skills of deduction seem pretty off. He was being confident in his plan and ability to get all the players signed under the cap. Nowhere did he say "All these players agreed to take less money and sign for xxx...thats just made up bullpoop.
- Archaic

a/ leafs have x amount of capspace left
b/ leafs have marner/nylander/matthews to resign
c/ combining a and b - to make a statement that all three new contracts would fit under the salary cap - it's not strange to deduct that dubas has a good idea of what players can be signed for (them agreeing with such deals)

So he was either making things up, or he's not good at maths?
- plantheparade

OR, the players father is seeking $2-$2.5 million more than his sons comparables and Dubas really wasn't expecting something that stupid.

Actually?

I hope Buffalo gives him that then.

Here's the evidence of that claim

Probably him or Forsberg. But the '12 draft is for sure one of the weakest last 20 years...
- 21peter

Thank (frank) the Leafs got one of the very few top class players in that draft.

This is a causal oversimplification if I've ever seen one

Sorry, that statements you made in regards to "Marner would have taken this before this season" and etc. are just made up with no factual basis to them.

Dubas can still sign all 3 under the cap if he wants. Marner was never going to sign last off season in all likeliness based on his comments in the summer.

He will not be traded to the Rangers its a dumb discussion. I think he resigns.

However, I will guarantee you if he is traded you will not like who you get back in return. 9 out of 10 times in this scenario the team who is forced to make this trade losses out unfortunately in every sport

- nyrangers2

Oh I agree, guaranteed I won't be happy at all.

We can all hope that they meet his demands after the Leafs sign all their players.

ah ok.
so that's why no team wants to trade for Nylander?

- plantheparade

Uh?
Ok.
Wingers are easier to come by if the leafs need one, always have been. No priority

Marner (his agent) has had contract talks with Leafs before start of this season.
Marner's agent commented that if no new deal was done before the start of the season, they would wait until off-season.

Nobody here knows what Marner was looking for, nor what Dubas has offered.
However, at least in here in discussions, people were assuming before start of this season that Marner would be signed at around 8-8.5mln / year (and that's probably already the higher side on estimations).
Please come forward those that before start of this season thought that it would require a 9-10million/year long term contract for Marner to re-sign with Leafs.

I never liked Yakupov, either.

At the time, if the Leafs were gonna draft a forward, I really wanted Galchenyuk. And of course Rielly on D.

He bet on himself having a good year with Tavares beside him. It doesnt take a genius to realize youll get lots of points on a line with one of the top players in the league. There is a reason why no contract was signed. Yet, you say it like a fact he would have signed for 8-8.5 which isnt a fact.

I'm surprised to see Werenski's name pop up in Nylander trade talks. I'd make that deal in a heartbeat. Can't imagine Columbus entertaining this type of move in the least.

What sayeth the rest of you?

Also, do you think Nylander's days are numbered as a Leaf if he does sign? Methinks yes... unless, of course, he does a complete about face and signs a sweetheart deal.

sure.
but marner at 9mln.
nylander at 7.5mln.
matthews at 11mln.

27.5mln - that's not a reason to say "we can and we will fit all three under salary cap".

Interesting... I don't know. Werenski is an RFA after this season, and might ask for similar salaries to Nylander. Unless he's more amenable to a bridge deal, I don't see it working from a cap perspective.

He also does nothing to address our RHD.

Maybe the only major advantage of getting him that I can see is he fills in for Gardiner if we get rid of him at TDL.

Of the 4 positions, Winger has to be the easiest by far to play.
