One signed his contract before the 16-17 season and one just signed his deal this offseason. What’s the % of the overall cap for each deal? That’s a better comparison. Plus, I think every Rangers fan would agree with you that Skjei has regressed from his rookie campaign. But when Rielly signed his deal, many thought his role would be a top-four shutdown defensive role under Babcock, the offense has been an unexpected benefit. - airjan23
Well who's fault is it for signing a guy for that after seeing him regress.
Umm what? No one. Not a single person thought that his role was going to be shutdown dman and that his offense is unexpected. No one. He was drafted as a skilled puck mover. Everyone saw the skills there. This is not unexpected. |

The deal has to be quality for quality. not quality for quantity. These deals like Ritchie and Montour will never happen.
Willy for Slavin or Werenski is the only way to go |

It's funny to me we still hear so much female doging about the Leafs. Top 5 in GA, the frontrunners for the Vezina and Norris on the team, only 1 point behind Tampa for 1st overall in the NHL and no NYlander the entire year.
If this team was named the Florida Panthers they'd be the darlings of the NHL. |

I agree with you that Skjei and Kreider are not on the same level as Nylander.
However, you have to realise that you need depth as well.
Leafs simply cannot fit in Nylander on this team at 7-7.5mln/year, ánd have enough room for other good players to fill 2nd/3rd/4th lines.
Look at the Oilers: they have McDavid (one of best in league) and Draisaitls and a few other contracts - just not enough room to have good depth. - plantheparade
Not even comparible.
Leafs already have 3 solid centers. They have solid wingers in Marner, Kapanen and Marleau. Points aside Hyman does well in his top 6 role too. Add Nylander to that and the depth is there.
You dont trade top end talent for depth. You draft and develop depth or sign them as FAs.

Leafs are lacking in young players that can step up during next 3-4 years (only 2-3 on Marlies that can really jump to Leafs) and UFAs in general are expensive. |

Depth players are so easy to get. Do not trade a blue chip top-line player for depth. |

Apparently Nylander doesn't feel likesigning new contract with Leafs.
(I understand his reasons).

Fine, but DO NOT make a trade for the sake of it. Make a trade only when it's a great one.
The deals like Kypreos' saying Montour+Ritchie are a joke.
And I understand the Leafs side of this contract situation. |

Not blaming anyone. Several in the hockey industry thought he may end in a shutdown role based on deployment by Babcock his first year on Toronto. Rielly has been phenomenal no doubt. I am not saying Skjei won’t rebound, but agreeing with you that he has regressed substantially. |

Good luck gentlemen. Will be a fun debate until and likely after he signs somewhere. |
