The only theory that gives some hope is this ....PM wanted to play 2 more years and was getting a few offers. Leafs offered him a contract that will let him play those two years and make 17.5 for two years of work. He agrees to waive the NMC in year 3 and gets traded to a cozy western golf community and gets a Zetterburg/Hossa/Datsyuk-like skin disorder that final year allowing him to retire.

Starting in September of 2019 PM will be making tiny dollars on his bi-weekly paycheque so maybe ...maybe ...there was no intent on him playing that final year.

Maybe ...

probably. if he misses a season he'll also be seen as a yashin/peca type and won't get much respect from fans/media in the future too.

The NMC was crucial to getting him to leave.

As was the 9 million more.

Gardiner should not be signed. Dermott is looking really good and is a younger, better, cheaper DMan. And I am no Gardiner hater.
- RogerRoeper

I have never been a big Gardiner fan, but if he keeps up the level of play of this season, and accepts a 5-6y deal of around 5.5million per year, Leafs should resign Gardiner.

Kessel costs us 1.2 per
- bixll

Even at that, it would be money saved for other salaries. Opens up a roster spot, to bring in veteran help at the trade deadline.

If he takes 6.5-7 million per he will.

Curious though ...where is Dubas with a bridge contract offer? When he blinks and offers it up this gets done.

Long term team friendly deal was never going to work for WN.

Get the 3 x 5.25 or whatever on the table and lets get back to work.

Not sure why a bridge deal for Nylander should be anything above 4mln/per.

Google it ...one of them got to retire (read: avoid enormous cap hit) due to some kind of skin disorder. I think Hossa?

Since he's signing so late, any deal will now bring down the cap hit, which would be very good.

Kucherov ... his ELC years were relatively comparable and then factor in some inflation. 4 is low ....maybe it's 4.75 or 5.0 ..whatever. Point is that is likely what the WN camp is waiting for and some of the talking heads suggested that the Leafs hadn't tabled one yet.

Quite sure the 'talking heads' are guessing as well..

I personally still think it's about Nylander thinking he'll be traded soon - and that's the main reason for him not accepting a decent contract (6.5/6years)

basically
1 - 5mil
2 - 5.5
3 - 6 or just a bit more

Which team would need to add (and what) if it's a

Nylander (resigned at let's say 7.5mln/year) for Tarasenko (7.5mln, 5y left)

deal?

sure.
but marner at 9mln.
nylander at 7.5mln.
matthews at 11mln.

27.5mln - that's not a reason to say "we can and we will fit all three under salary cap".

Hawks tried it with Toews, Kane, Keith, Seabrook, Crawford, Hossa, etc. 45M locked up in six players is difficult as hell to manage. Lost A LOT of good players over the years to keep our Core together. Not an easy task but it can be done. It's worth it if you can get a Cup win or two out of it. By all means, if you can find a way to make it work go for it but at some point that secondary scoring is gonna get harder and harder to come by unless you can make some really good deals once guys have priced themselves out of town.

Thr problem is that the Hawks gave these deals to guys in their late 20s and in their 30s. Only Tavares would fit under that same class. Imo Nylander Matthews and Marner havent yet hit their primes while those guys were already halfway into theirs or near the end of it.

4.5 -5.25 per for a bridge.
But the cap hit will be less due to situation
